@annemc63 850 once a day is a modest dose.
Although I began with a hideous attack that everyone thought was going to be very serious, since then I've barely registered as pre-diabetic, and I take 1000mg twice a day. If I cut back the dose I see a small rise in BG and A1C - so I stay on it. It lets me cheat a bit on my diet!
Metformin is also one of these drugs that some people think may help with life extension, preserving general functioning as we age. Some people who have normal BG may take 500mg or more per day just for that purpose.

@annemc63 Did you ask your doctor why the dose is so high? Did the doctor discuss with you lab results?
