Mercury induced Neuropathy caused by Dental Treatment?

Posted by pennycurious1 @pennycurious1, Dec 8, 2025

Hello,
I have been suffering from peripheral neuropathy in my legs and hands, crippling pains on both sides when resting.

The problem started as mild tingling in both heels, then fire burning on both peroneal sides. I was originally diagnosed with tarsal tunnel syndrome, later with baxter neurology, then - maybe money motivated - have been offered surgery, which I refused. A podiatrist helped me reduce the pain with special orthotics, but the slight tingling in the feet, particularly left side, remained.

Then, I started orthodontic treatment to straighten my teeth and improve chewing status. At that time I still had 5 very large 30 year old silver fillings in my mouth. Within 2 months after starting orthodontic treatment I had lost 20 pounds, I started having cramp attacks day and night, my energy levels sank below par, I started having crippling pains in feet, ankles, shin, calves and severe muscle atrophies on my left leg. Finally I thought of the possibility of mercury poisoning. I had a lab test my saliva for heavy metals. The result was mind blowing: beside several other heavy metals such tin, the mercury content was elevated 10 times the maximum recommended amount. Blood work also showed elevated mercury content. Besides that heavy metal poisoning I was diagnosed with heavy mast cell activation.

I then had all silver fillings carefully removed. After chelating processes I found a bit of relief, but any kind of triggers such as virus infections etc. cause my neurological symptoms to worsen.

Does anybody have similar experiences with mercury exposure?

Does anyone have detailed information on mercury induced neuropathy due to dental treatments?

Are there any treatment recommendations provided by dental professionals?

Would blood transfusions with mercury-free blood be of any help? Got rid of all of my old amalgam fillings years ago. Can't say that I could attribute any current issues with old fillings.

I have CVI, Vericose Veins and Peripheral neuropathy, I also suffer from teeth pain with dental infection ruled out. I was told by one dental specialist that I had too much dental work. My understanding is any kind dental work can cause nerve damage including shifting of teeth. Don’t know which dental work caused the chronic bout of pain but it is awful. Wondering as I read the issues of others, can all this nerve pain be connected?

@pennycurious1 I have also had issues related to old silver dental amalgam fillings. I don't know if there is any correlation with pain or neuropathy. Neuropathy seems to happen with aging to a lot of people. I have not experienced that myself.

The amalgam fillings have silver, tin and mercury from my understanding. I developed an autoimmune thyroid condition, Hashimotos thyroiditis. I was advised by an environmental medicine physician to have the old fillings removed and replaced with safer materials and I did. Prior to this, my bloodwork for the antibodies attacking my thyroid was so high, it was off the charts, and a reading could not be established. After removing the amalgam, the antibody levels were readable and low, but still present. At that time, I also had old dental work in several teeth of root canals under crowns that were made of various metals under porcelain. When the root canals began to fail, I had those teeth removed and replaced with biocompatible zirconium dental implants and a bridge also made of zirconium which is a type of ceramic without metals added. I had blood work to test again, and now I was borderline for Hashimoto's, so technically it was not my diagnosis anymore, but the damage had been done. I have been taking desiccated pig thyroid to replace what my body doesn't make anymore because my thyroid was damaged.

Another recent bit of information from my current dentist is a list of the brands of toothpaste that contain some small amount of lead. It says that no amount of lead is safe for consumption. It seems to be in the ingredients as an environmental contaminant. There were a couple brands of baby toothpaste that had no testable lead. If you do an internet search, you can find the source website that my dentist gave to me.

Thank you, Jennifer, for your very detailed and informative reply! Yes, it seems we are surrounded by and treated with all sorts of toxins, which seem to have a different kinds of effect on each body, sometimes causing irreversible damage.

We will have to find ways of how to compensate. Thanks again!

I am convinced that dental work can either trigger or be the last straw to an maybe unnoticed preexisting condition and cause neuropathy.

What I have found out in my years of trying to find pain relief for my chronic neuropathy pain is that the nervous system and especially the brain is highly complex. The incredibly complex physical and chemical pathways are intricately sensitive. Any curcuit "block" can throw of the system.

I think that is why it so difficult even for medical professionals to find answers, diagnoses and most importantly find the right treatment. Trial and error seems the only hope. Some patients are lucky. So far, I am not one of them.

I hope you will be!
