Anybody diagnosed with microscopic colitis?
Hi, wondering if anybody here has this for a dx. I have been having a flare for about two months, it is getting a little better with the meds but the doctor wants me to go on a short dose of steriods. I already have a muscle disease so hate to go the steriod route, (plus do not need to gain weight) lol. But if anyone has any hints for me I would appreciate it on how to control this. It is the longest flare I have had.

@janstur I understand about how you feel about your GI. I have finally been referred to a female GI. I hope she is more attentive. In the 25 years I’ve had GI’s, every single one of them has turned out to be as misogynistic as the last. My husband hasn’t had a problem with any of them. I guess the best thing to do is keep an eye on your bone density. There are positive things you can do to help. Take vitamin D3. My PC has me taking a lot, but you need to discuss that with your doc. Start doing core and weight bearing exercises (like walking every day). Sit in the sun for 15 minutes every day. That’s all it takes to get your daily dose of vitamin D. Unfortunately, I started breaking a lot of bones and my last spinal X-ray showed that my bones looked like lace…you could see holes through them.

2 Reactions@ndough So sorry to hear about your bones!! Can you build them back up? Is that possible? Do you think it's due to the Budesonide?

1 Reaction@janstur I’ve never taken Budesonide. It wasn’t used when I first developed MC. Budesonide will cause problems if you have osteoporosis or other bone issues and then you start taking it, but my issues were caused by being given too many corticosteroids when I was in my teens and twenties for dance injuries. That was pretty much before the lasting dangers of what they could do were known (or so I was so informed by Docs).
@ndough Wow! So sorry. I have my regular doc appointment soon. I'll run it by her. I'm taking it every 3 days and it's working well. We'll see. So...you were a dancer? Or still?
@janstur LOL! I was. I’m in my 70’s now. I started early in ballet, but in my twenties moved into jazz. I’ll tell you, had Hip Hop been a professional genre back then I would have moved into it in a flash.

1 Reaction@ndough Very cool! We have a young friend (40 something!) who is a hip hop choreographer. In the past few years he's become famous choreographing for Jennifer Lopez and Disney to name a couple! His name is Kyle Hanagami and you can search for him on YouTube - very talented.

1 Reaction@janstur There are many excellent ones out there now. Dave Scott was always one of my favorites. Sadly he passed away last summer.
@janstur can you please let me know what your doctor says about Busdesonide? I’ve been on it since September and also wondered about the effect on bones. Thank you so much.

2 Reactions@annpeters Yes, I'll post once I talk to my regular doc. I don't even try to see my GI. I have an appt. with her on the 17th. No worries. And I love her, she's young and researches everything. Very thorough!

2 Reactionscarolejeffers. I was recently diagnosed with one of the microscopic colitis and put on the Budesonide. First 3 pills a day for 2 weeks, then 2 pills a day for 2 weeks and them 1 pill a day for 2 weeks and then stop! it cleared up the. colonitis but it came back in3 or 4 weeks. Back on 3 pills a day which works great. But doctor now says to wean myself off of it as before because of its long term effects of steroids.
I have not found this side effect in any research i've done. When I asked him to explain what were the long term effects of a low dose of steroids he kind of shrugged and said I would get a round back.
I do have a bit of a forward and downward tilt to my head. I am 82, had stomach cancer 10 years ago, anti cancer drugs gave me osteoporosis so now on annual infusion for that. I really want to know about any long term effects of the budesonide also,
Has anybody been on it for a long time?
