The surgeon’s legal team makes him mention every remote possibility so no one sues them later saying you never mentioned that before. Following that protocol makes the hospital legal team happy but unnecessarily scares patients. I know because I’ve been on the receiving end of those disclaimers and it’s no fun. You can’t change anything today, so focus on other things. Remember the serenity prayer, “God, help me change the things I can, accept the things I cannot change, and have the wisdom to know the difference.”
Here’s another distraction technique used to treat insomnia for people with a busy mind. Slowly go thru the alphabet and think of a word that starts with each letter. A is for Apple. B is for bicycle. C is for cat. Etc. If you’re still awake by z then start over and think of new words each time. Jessie, you need to tell yourself you don’t want to worry anymore and make a decision to try some of these distraction techniques. We can’t control our first thought, but we can control our second thought. Your first thought right now is to worry. That’s understandable. We all do it. Your second thought is for you to decide if you’re going to keep focusing on that worry or if you’re going to try to focus on something else. Please give something else a try. You can do it.
