Calf pain after TKR

Posted by afladland @afladland, Jan 23, 2023

I am 5 weeks post op from TKR on my right knee. From the very 1st week, most of my pain is in my calf. It seems to be getting worse with every week. It is especially painful when I am sitting or driving. The only thing that gives me immediate relief is when I get in a hot bath. At my 4 week check up, I have virtually no swelling and my ROM is where its suppose to be. It is such a deep ache in my calf with numbness in my foot. Ultrasound showed no blood clot. I've been from my surgeon to a vascular specialist and now referred to a neurologist. Has anyone had this issue?

I am one year post Tkr For the past few months I experience calf pain usually accompanied by back of knee pain and heel pain. Yesterday my heel felt numb instead of pain. I occasionally have significant stiffness and believe I have lost some bend. In October my surgeon checked out the knee and the tkr results were fine. He didn’t offer much help about my pain other than discuss it with my PT. Lately the pain in calf and back of knee is worse and keeping me from much exercise and walking is not easy. I’ve read the Mayo articles on the possible nerve issue and may try to get an appt with a neurologist. Overall I think the knee itself is good but so far I’m not better off in general than before tkr.

@bobmac I have something similar: started just in the replacement leg about 8 months after surgery, progressed to other leg. One year check up P.A. told me athat "quadriceps begin to wake up around on year." I thought the aches would subside and they do not. Have just started PT. What more did you leard about your pain? Did you consult a neurologist?

I’m 3 weeks today. Had my left one 2 years ago, no issues. Expected the same this right one. Should have realized it wasn’t going to be as easy when my leg buckled under getting ready to leave outpatient.

My pain was so bad on my calf, I thought I must have nerve damage. Called, they said it was from the nerve block and would go away. It hasn’t, it’s much worse than the surgical procedure.
Been to PT twice and I’m one who could handle pain, quite a few surgeries in my life. I’m telling you the pain, and I’m on the meds) made me cry. The most simplest activity was almost unbearable. I was embarrassed, shocked, disappointed, and my eyes were full of tears.
Back tomorrow and I have been trying what I did yesterday and not making progress. My little dogs are very concerned .
I’ll update my hopeful progress and I will be reading the posts.
Take care and I’d like to see you all find your solution for this problem.

I have severe calf pain as soon as I woke from procedure. They checked for blood clot & negative. 2019. I have went back several times, had PT, massage techniques, done exercises and couldn't walk very far without cramping. Not until this year did it go away! The knee did just fine. Persist!
