Burning on top of feet

Posted by highdesertdweller @highdesertdweller, 4 days ago

I've seen this posted before but now can't locate the Group. Looking for help with burning sensation on the top of my feet. Has just started recently. Have tried so many lotions and potions for my neuropathy and am at wit's end. Thanks! Caleb

Hi Caleb @highdesertdweller, There are quite a few discussions on burning feet. Most are in the Neuropathy Support Group but there are a few discussions in other groups also. I did a search of Connect using "burning feet what helps" and you might find some helpful suggestions from other members if you want to scan through the discussions and comments - https://connect.mayoclinic.org/search/.

@highdesertdweller
Do you have diabetes? Do you drink alcohol, smoke or vape?

Have you seen a neurologist for neuropathy bloodwork panel to check glucose, vitamin deficiencies/toxicities, etc.?

You may want to get a small fiber neuropathy skin punch biopsy and EMG/nerve conduction study of lower limbs by a neurologist/neuromuscular specialist to check large and small nerve fiber health?

You may also want to try aloha Lipoic acid, acetyl l carnitine, omega 3 and magnesium supplements to see if they help. It would be good to wait to have a neuropathy bloodwork panel done first.

*alpha Lipoic acid (not aloha, but wouldn’t mind being in Hawaii right now!😉).

Those are my exact, weird symptoms and the only thing that works for me is having an icepack on my feet. I've recently tried those roll-on gels, like BioFreeze, and that works, too. Good luck!

I've had good luck with topicals.
I massage in a layer of Voltaren gel, wait a bit for it to absorb, then rub in a layer of Aspercreme (4% lidocaine).
Gets me through the night when things flare up.

Thanks. Yes, I have diabetes and have tried a lot of what you mention with no success. My burning is very intractable unfortunately. I'm just looking for a bit of relief and have spent hundreds, maybe thousands now on lotions, potions, extracts, pills, etc. etc. to no avail. I usually try one new thing a week, throwing stuff at the wall to see if SOMETHING can stick and stop the pain for a bit.

I'm awaiting HIGH mg CBD oil--1500 mg now as that was recommended by someone on the site and Vicks VapoRub seems to be favored by many. Those will be for this week:). Thanks again, everybody. PLEASE keep the suggestions coming. My neuropathy just gets worse and worse. Started as numbness and remained so for years, but then the pins and needles and recently the burning started. Still mostly in the feet which I suppose I should be thankful for but my quality of life is pretty miserable right now. I don't ask for much these days, just a break so I can get some reading done or watch a football game in a bit of peace w/o the pain.

By the way, I find the neurologists ABSOLUTELY USELESS. They know and can do "nothing, Nothing" to quote Sgt. Schultz on Hogan's Heroes. I've gotten Pregabalin from my Nurse Practioner which has helped but I find the disease just rises to the level of the dosage, so increasing the dosage will just invite greater neuropathy. Is that what others have found?
