I agree about the wrist brace for severe thumb arthritis. I am having a new one made next week, because my 15-year old model finally broke. It was the only thing that stopped the pain, and I don't wear it all the time, only when the flare is bad enough to keep me awake at night or curtail my activities. These casts are made specifically for each person, by a trained OT or PT expert, and they are fashioned for you with a product called thermoplastic casting. The heated plastic is shaped for your thumb and wrist and should fit perfectly. I wear it for 12 -18 hours and I am good to go. Ask your ortho about it if you have severe pain. I am a candidate for surgery, but I don't want to go under the knife again, and this works for me.

My doctors always insisted that I wear a brace on my hands at night.

1 ReactionI’m 76 & have worn braces upon flare ups for the last 25 years & I’ve found they really help. I also use the lidocaine patches on my hands to relieve the pain. Good luck & keep thinking positively. It really helps 🙏
Hi Pete,
Thanks for your comments. The lidocaine patches really help to decrease pain. I used them on my shoulder before getting a total shoulder replacement in August this year. There is a prescription strength patch, 5% lidocaine available as well. They cost quite a lot though, and OTC 4% patches probably work just as well.
I inherited osteoarthritis from my Mom, and it's everywhere. I'm 71 and I've had both knees replaced, right hip, and just 3 months ago, left shoulder. The surgeries have truly helped rod me of pain in those joints.
Hands, ankles, and feet are harder to treat. I did have bunionectomies in both big toes about 1o years ago, and that really helped. I have arthritis at the base of my thumb and in my fingers. I find movement is the best thing and most days don't feel anything. But a brace is an excellent idea.
(Lidocaine is also available in cream form. Another good OTC gel for arthritis pain is Voltaren. For anyone considering this, it does have more side effects, so please check that out first.

Hi- I just purchased from Amazon FREETOO Ergonomical Thumb Brace Right Hand or Left Hand for Arthritis Pain and Support, Thumb Splint for Trigger Thumb, Thumb Support for De Quervains Tenosynovitis, Fits Palm 7.5''-8.5'' S/M Pink for one hand and White for the other. They are fabulous and very reasonably priced. I also have full size braces, but for thumbs- these are great!
