Salty taste

Sorry, I don't know where to put this. Maybe a moderator can move it . Thanks. A long time ago I lost my sense of salty taste. But lately water and ice have a very strong salty taste. Still not in my food. Anyone know what is going on?

You're right! I couldn't find any members who have posted about this, but I'm going to ask @jamienolson, who is the moderator for the Eye, Ear, Nose & Throat group if she has any insight?

In the meantime, here are a few points to consider, which I summarized while researching online;

1) If your tap water has a salty aftertaste, it is likely caused by either a high concentration of chloride ions and/or sulfates in your water supply, possibly due to industrial waste, irrigation drainage, or seawater entering local reservoirs.
Sulfates may occur naturally in soil and rocks.
2) Drinking water and cooking water should not go through a water softener, as softeners uses salt to wash out the ion exchange chamber.
3) Very often, major dental work, and/or certain medications may cause taste disorders.

Hello @ryman, this is something I will have to look into and get back to you on. Sometimes at different establishments I can taste a saltiness in the water too so I am also interested in knowing. Can you tell me- is this just at your home? or when you are out?

I so seldom drink water away from my house. We have a well and the water is so bad we have to use a whole house softener plus a Brita faucet filter. My grandson says he can't taste salt in the water. So it must be something with me, just another trick of my weird body, I guess. Makes it hard because my swallowing problem makes drinking difficult as it is. So I get dehydrated. Thanks.

Could be a deficiency in vitamins or minerals
