Can anyone give me tips on collecting a sputum sample for culture

I have had a return of MAC after 10 years. I need to collect a sputum sample for AFB but I don’t ever cough. I was recently in hospital for a breathing flare. I have Pulmonary Hypertension as well as COPD. Because of an early reaction on a sputum culture for MAC my pulmonologist started the three meds. He wanted a follow up sputum but I can’t collect one. Any suggestions on how I can get this done. I never seem to have a productive cough.

Do you use albuterol and sodium chloride by neb? An Accapella or Aerobika device and huff cough helps following the breathing treatment. I’ve also found that using Mucinex thins my mucous and makes it easier to cough out.

Do you use albuterol and sodium chloride by neb? An Accapella or Aerobika device and huff cough helps following the breathing treatment. I’ve also found that using Mucinex thins my mucous and makes it easier to cough out.

@sharonednaramsey Thanks for your reply. I do not use nebulizers at all. I have just the puff albuterol. I also have a flutter devise that has never helped at all. I have used mucinex but not in trying to get sputum. I will try to use all of the things I have and see if that helps as I have never done before and see what happens. Thanks
