Leather shoes with wide toe boxes for rain & snow?

Posted by nancyjg @nancyjg, Nov 13 7:11am

My husband developed idiopathic neuropathy this past Summer ('25) and learned he also has Morton's Neuroma and a fat pad that has atrophied. Finding shoes has been a problem, although his Topo athletic shoes (Amazon) with additional inserts and socks without seams, work really well. But it's getting cold now, and his office is 6 blocks from his parking lot so he needs warm, waterproof shoes. Has anyone who's had neuropathy longer than than my husband, and lived through a winter, have recommendations?

Hello,
I have the same issue and wondering the same thing about shoes. I would also appreciate any suggestions.
Thank you and take care,

@gus0557 Hi Gus, let's hope we get recommendations before the first snow! I'm finding these groups give important information - we also learn a lot from the (too) many Facebook neuropathy support groups, and need to sift through the ads for real content. But sometimes the ads are worth it.

My husband just found shoes that he was happy with when he tried them on yesterday, but then found the left shoe is a little small for his less impacted foot. Instead of returning them to Amazon's Ortho store, I bought a shoe expander today and hope that works. I hadn't thought about expanders until I asked ChatGPT about it. We find it great that it can recommend shoes specifically for your personal issue. (Always ask for URL's.)

Stay in touch. Toooooo many people have neuropathy and Morton's!

Recommendation for the Morton's Neuroma: get custom made orthotics from the best orthotic specialist you can find. I live in a town where a lot of competitive athletes live and many (dare I say most) have custom orthotics. The custom orthotics fixed the Morton's Neuroma. By wearing shoes with the custom orthotics in, I can even go barefoot and the Morton's neuroma isn't a problem.
Zappos.com is a good source for all sorts of a wide range of footwear. Good luck.

Hello

I hope this info helps:

Ive had to get specially molded shoe inserts. No other inserts will work for me. Ive had to resort to wearing mens shoes and Merrill brand shoes for a wider toe box and support. Merrills are the best fit as far as outside rugged conditions go. Also, i highly advise getting creative with the laces. Sometimes theres inflamation so i skip the first 1 - 2 pairs of eyelets which will widen the toe box. Also Red Wing brand has anti slip shoes. I hope he gets relief. Also lots of stretching and PT if they know how to treat feet and toes (please see your Dr before doing). The above is my experience after podiatry and PT.

Hello again,
Thank you for your reply and I hope things work out with your husband.
The only other thing I can strongly recommend is to really sift through everything you see online and dig quite deep into the available medical research for clarity.
By the way, we already had our first taste of snow for the season. The cold weather is terrible on my body with the condition.
Best wishes to you and your husband.
Take care and have a serene weekend,
gus

Why do you specify leather? I have a pair of Merrill waterproof hiking shoes that are wide for my big feet with a large toe box for thick socks. They are also vibram heals and soles for slippage.

I own 2 pairs of LL Bean insulated "snow sneakers" (5th edition). I really like them and find they keep my feet warmer in the winter. They are waterproof too. I would recomend getting them 1 size larger than your usual and get Wide EE width. This will give you a roomy toe box and also allow space for heavy socks. They also come in regular laces, Velcro closure or zipper closure.

@jenatsky I specified leather because it's what my husband asked for. You're right that there are waterproof shoes other than leather and I'll look into the Merrill hiking boots. Thank you!!

@crossette These look terrific! Adding the URL was great. He hats laces, so this should work. I'll try them. Thanks so much!
