Darolutamide and atorvastatin: Anyone taken a statin along with ADT?

Posted by mmacaulay @mmacaulay, Nov 13 10:44am

I’ve been hesitant to take a statin. I’ve been taking darolutamide for over three years, over eighteen months as monotherapy. Cholesterol has gone up. Am high risk for AFIB. Has anyone experienced issues with atorvastatin while doing ATP and/or ARI?

Been on atorvastatin 80mg for years, probably more than 10. Started Orgovyx/Nubeqa in June. Other than standard ADT side effects, didn't really notice anything. Prior to the PCa thing, Doc did try to switch me to Crestor. Joints started screaming and I went back to Lipitor.

I had major problems with Lipitor and other statin type cholesterol drugs. They just about crippled me and my ability to get around and walk. About 10 years ago when I was put on, it was out to dinner with friends and when I got up to go to the bathroom and they saw me walking they asked my wife If I had a serious medical problem. I found out it was the statin that was crippling me.

This isn’t normal most people don’t have this problem. There are other drugs that are not statins that can reduce your cholesterol. Just something to be aware of.

I’ve always had low cholesterol so it didn’t make sense to be on it in the first place. Been on ADT for almost 8 years, Zytiga followed by Nubeqa, They never raised my cholesterol. They do it to some people.

@jeffmarc and MM - you can look into this one . I take 2.5 mg of Crestor ( so small of a dose - but it works with me , no need to take 5 mg pill , so I cut it in half ) and also : Ezetrol 10 mg, also known as ezetimibe, is a medication used to lower "bad" cholesterol (LDL) levels in the blood by reducing its absorption in the intestines. It is typically prescribed alongside diet and lifestyle changes to help manage high cholesterol and reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke. With me I noticed a 4KG loss of weight when I started Ezatrol . I think it blocks some of th high calorie saturated fats , hence lower weight . From what I was told it reduces Fat absorption by 30-60 % in the average person my Dr said . So you still have to watch yoru diet , but this helps . for me zero side effects . Doesnt seem to affect PSA readings . In fact I read one science review that statins reduce cancer lesions growth etc ... a number of them out there , however im not sure of the science per se , and efficacy with cancers .

I’ve been taking 10 mg Atorvastatin for about 10 years, following an inconclusively diagnosed TIA. Have continued taking it during all 11 months of ADT (Orgovyx) to date with no issues. I also take Eliquis for stroke prevention during occasional Afib. In a Nov. 1 http://www.pcri.org conference also webcast, in the last hour two panelists strongly recommended statins during treatment, since statistically most of us men will die from cardiovascular events rather than PCa, and since ADT tends to elevate cholesterol.

I am on Nubeqa and my cardiologist put me on Atorvastatin. Checking interactions I found the following
" " "SERIOUS
Potential for serious interaction; regular monitoring by your doctor required or alternate medication may be needed.
Darolutamide + Atorvastatin
Darolutamide will increase the level or effect of Atorvastatin by Other mechanism." " "

Then he put me on pravastatin.
hope this helps

@mmacaulay, did you decide to take a statin? What was the recommendation from your cardiologist and oncologist?

REPLY

Yes I decided to start taking a statin. My visit with a cardiologist convinced me after he used AI to interpret my electrocardiogram, which indicated I am a high risk for AFIB. He checked with a pharmacologist about compatibility with the Nubeqa I’ve been taking and prescribed 10 mg Lipitor. I subsequently met with my oncologist, who had prescribed Nubeqa when I started chemo. He suggested I take 5 mg Crestor. I went with his recommendation.
