How long do symptoms last after completing ADT?

Posted by chris135711 @chris135711, Nov 6 9:00am

I've completed radiation and 18 of 24 months of planned ADT (abiraterone + leupron) for high-risk but localized PC. My major side effects are fatigue, decreased muscle mass, increased abdominal fat and (of course) loss of libido. My question is, how long does it take for the side effects of ADT to resolve after stopping the medications? Thank you - I look forward to hearing about your experiences.

@graybeard46 Please don't let each day be a downer?! My husband & I are still romantic, etc. He just stopped ADT after almost 5yrs, but I don't really expect return of his libido. I just feel bad he can't get that particular pleasure back, but there is still the mindful attraction to each other with the rest of the body even at almost 78 & 60yrs married. Remember, menopause can do a real number on the opposite sex?!

I am 83 and just finished hormone treatment 4 months ago. I see no improvement in libido and my testosterone is < 10. I can only hope for a better future and remember that there can be love without lust.

@jonesfit65 appreciate your comment, I’m a stubborn Italian who before I got prostate cancer last year I thought and acted like a 65 yr old and not 78 but I guess I’m fighting the inevitable that I can’t be 65 forever but I hope I can somehow accept the fact that the 43 yrs of making love to the love of my life is in the past. We hug and kiss each morning and night but it’s not the same , life isn’t always fair , we had a good run but will hope maybe I’ll wake up to a surprise 😂

It is hard to explain. I just do not have the strength, balance, and confidence of before. If I used those poles (or even a cane), I would draw too much attention from some of the dangerous people who prowl the streets looking for weak victims. Thank you for your kindness.

Me too. Though off Lupron for 18 months & now 78 YO.
Thought I was OK enough so took a "Tour of Europe" last Sept.
Hard to keep up with the group and huge crowds always jostling us.
Trekking poles came in handy to deflect ppl from us and let me see enough of the pavement (bricks or cobbles, usually) to not trip and fall.
Didn't feel weird. Just in charge 🙂
Happy 'hiking' and full recovery from SE's
