How does your knee feel once it reaches the year of recovery?

I have heard it takes a full year for recovery of TKR. How 🤔 does your knee feel while approaching that one year mark?

My 1 year is coming up also. The knee is good most of the time with no pain. I do still have some clunking at times and some swelling, redness and heat when I have a day of 10,000+ steps. Also, I still sleep with a pillow for my knee some nights. The biggest problem that I have right now is finding shoes that work. I think I walked on the outside of my foot before surgery and now I walk on the inside. I live in a small town area with no access to a shoe store that will fit you properly. The bottom line is, things are much, much better than 1 year ago.

@timely I order from Orthofeet.com.
They offer a 60 day wear trial. Best shoes for me. Great for plantar, diabetics and neuropathy.

I counted my 1 year a year after my MUA- Manipulation under anesthesia.
Although I thought I was the ideal candidate for a total knee replacement- I developed scar tissue and had pretty bad results at my 6 week post-op check up. I am so glad I had the MUA (as a result of a 2nd opinion Dr.).
Just returned from a huge trip across Canada and America and did some very aggressive uphill mountain hikes. My knee worked wonderfully. Finally feel like it has earned its keep and work.

But- the left knee is starting to act up bad. The x-ray showed major deterioration in just over a year. Maybe too much hiking?

Searching and reading about Nano and Jiffy, I just can't go through all of that again.

@cathymw Similar experience. And same thoughts about how to have my other knee done. Recovery was a very traumatic experience. MUA was helpful of course. Would go with a different approach but I fear that could be as traumatic as well? Am I just not the ideal candidate for TKR? Thankfully I am very active again. Hiking/walking miles, pilates, etc... Would love a 135-140 bend again. I am told that is extremely unrealistic. One can hope...

@outlook Could you share some of the obstacles you thought contributed to your need for your MUA?

I just filled out a survey for Northwestern, the center for excellence program where I had my surgery. Excellent everything. Best care ever.

Where was the disconnect leading to the MUA? Over 4 hour drive? Not enough communication with PT and Dr? A week delay in the ordered PT as nurse came to my home with Covid so I fired her- thus delaying PT until 1 week after surgery? It was outpatient PT too aggressive? I worked diligently but never progressed. They’d push on my knee ( 2 people) to try to straighten it flex it. I didn’t know the norms.

At my 6 week checkup, an MUA should have been scheduled perhaps. The PT 3x/wk was futile- I never was progressing. It was t until I sent pictures of my knee with the measuring tool before we started discussing the lack of progress. My second opinion sent a report and got the ball rolling.

Hi, I am 19 months post Op TKR and am still having issues especially with "The Band" sensation around my knee. If you don't have you, count your blessings. & after manipulation 2 months after surgery I got Tendonitis of my Glut/buttocks. I did have 1 cortisone injection in my glut but it did not lessen the pain. I stretch my knee each morning and I feel it helps it. I called the surgeons office and they said I am welcome to get another opinion. I don't feel I should have to get another opinion but that is what I have to do. I feel that my knee is not right, always discomfort, burning and tenderness. I wanted to ask if any one else has the Band?

PRP injections are a regenerative medical treatment that involves injecting your own platelets into damaged tissues. Platelets contain growth factors that promote healing and tissue repair.

I am 4 months into recovery and the “band” sensation you mention is quite painful but if I continue with PT exercises it becomes much worse with swelling, burning, abstaining sensations. My surgeon is no help. Currently my PT is trying to to find some solutions for me but right now nothing is working

I am one week after TKR for my right knee. I realize that this is the one year group but you all are the one that came up first. The only good thing I can say about the past week is that it is over. The issue that has made everything harder is that I had an allergic reaction to something that was put on the back of my right leg. I had already told the surgeon that I had an allergic reaction to something used on my earlier partial TKR in March. He said he had it under control , that he was using hypo-allergic metal and everything was going to be okay. In addition to feeling lousy because of the prednisone I am taking, I have started P.T. and dealing with pain. I think I am doing okay with the rehab but I am angry about the allergic reaction. I want to find out why this happened again. I had allergy tests for chemicals and showed up positive for linalool (ingredient ) in skin creams). I listed it on my intake forms and it made no difference. I want someone to explain what happened.

Keep doing your therapy - it should get easier. I know the "Band" is not a good sensation. I asked other sites and most people said it goes away so I am hoping & praying it will be gone some day - soon. But in the meantime I stretch each morning & walk each day. I am thankful I can walk each day. I hope you get some relief soon with therapy. Don't stop. Good Luck.
