I am having numbness on my lower left lip and chin.

In the last two months I have had strange things happening. I have numbness in my lower left lip and chin. There is no pain, just numbness. In the last week I am suffering a horrible pain in my right lower back, from my waist down about 5" into my butt. There is a cord I can feel. I also feel numbness in my toes recently. I'm a 73 year old female. Any clues what could be causing this and what I should do?

Hmmm, @almostoutofthewoods , this sounds like two separate issues to me. Facial numbness should be evaluated because it can be an indication of something serious, or it could just be random. The buttock pain sounds a lot like an angry sciatic nerve. This can often be managed with ice, heat and stretching.

But, since you are having multiple symptoms, maybe a visit to your primary care provider can give you a clue as to what is going on and put your mind at ease?

Thanks for responding Sue! I've been reading online about trigeminal neuralgia, but since I've had no pain in my face, only numbness, it might not be that. I haven't gone to my primary care Dr. because they seem to send you in for a cat scan or MRI and possibly not as knowledgeable as I am by reading from many sources online. Yes, I have had several sciatic nerve episodes in the last 5 years, so you're probably right, that is a separate issue. I found that 4% lidocane patches and ice helped that problem and heat irritated it. As long as the facial numbness stays the same, I am not doing anything about it, which might not be the right thing to do. Getting old is NOT for sissies!

So for years, I struggled with sciatic nerve issues, and it finally occurred to me they only happen in my summer residence, where I have a cushy reclining leather sofa, or when traveling by car and spending a lot of time sitting on a hotel bed doing computer stuff or watching TV. In my winter home, where a much firmer and smaller Lay-z-boy rocker came with the house, not so much. It turned out it was compression on the nerve from poor posture on the cushy couch - when I put a firm memory-foam seat cushion (meant for a car) on it, the problem got better. When I added one to my computer chair and driver's seat, better still. Finally, when I added daily stretches recommended by my ortho doc to my daily exercise regimen - poof! Gone.

Not sure I agree about ignoring the facial numbness...

Hello almost, did u figure out what was causing the chin numbness?

I also have numbness with no pain in my left lower lip and chin. I've had it for about a year. In August of 2024 I was diagnosed with stage 4 metastatic cancer and had 10 radiation treatments to my head because I had a brain tumor from the cancer. Now I'm on Verzenio and my hands shake a lot and I have neuropathy in my feet and lower legs. I've also had many bouts of sciatica in the past, but that hasn't happened for a year. I think a trip to a neurologist would be a good idea. I've had many CAT scans, PET scans X-rays and MRI's since being diagnosed with stage 4 metastatic cancer. Verzenio has many horrible side effects, but it is definitely killing cancer cells. My blood test marker for CA27.29 started at 1698 last September, then dropped to 500 in November and my last test a couple of weeks ago was 177! Normal range is less than 39, so I'm not cancer free, but in 4 months that's very encouraging. Keep on fighting!!

I have Trigeminal Neuritis which is similar to Trigeminal Neurlagia except I am more numb in the whole right side of my face, teeth, scalp & gums. I have similar symptoms but my Neurologist says it presents as an infection or inflammation and since I have an autoimmune disease they have connected it to that. No Cures, they rarely see this so it is considered a rare disease. It can slowly progress to neck and arms, but it will most likely be very slow if it does travel. I have had MRI’s for this but nothing appears to be seen. I guess compared to some of these other circumstances, its not too bad, but for me its bad enough, Scary not knowing.

I have this numbness that just started last night! Not my chin but just my lower left side of my lip,its no where else on my face but it won't go away. I noticed it when I woke up during the middle of the night. Should I see a Dr if it persist past today?

Always wise to pay attention to new unusual symptoms.
If it persists see your primary MD.
Possibly viral onset or mild form of neuralgia.
A dental issue could also cause symptoms.

I am a "Misery loves company person". I read your post and it is like a friend knocked on my door. I have numbness on my face as well and here is how mine happened. Eight months ago I woke up with a very distinct headache. The entire top of my head to my eyebrows had pain. My very good PCP gave me a script, but pain continued creeping down my face! I put myself in the Hospital where they experimented with a new drug which caused horrible, violent body shaking. When the side effects calmed down, I left. I tried the Hospital one more time to no avail. The pain is past my chin and the side effects are severe memory loss. Doctors, MRI, CT Scan with no help whatsoever. I do not know where to go from here. Anyone else?

The right side of my lower lip became numb perhaps five years ago. The area has only marginally enlarged. The inside of my mouth feels like there is swelling there but it isn’t measurable. Two years ago I received a mild concussion in a car crash and then asked the neurologist about it. He was polite, but said that he had no explanation for it. He also said that if it wasn’t spreading or affecting speech or eating, he didn’t think I needed to worry.

The lack of sensation in my toes and foot pain were not activity-restricting at the time, although I had experienced a few falls. I didn’t mention my feet because I wasn’t really bothered by them.

Looking back, I can see that the neuropathy in my feet had been slowly brewing for years and I dismissed the early signs, attributing them to aging (I retired at 74), being on my feet so much as a nurse, being overweight, poor shoes, and so on. I don’t know if the lip and the feet are related. Even with the trips and falls, I thought it was merely clumsiness and part of aging.

Do some of the rest of you feel that you ignored or dismissed symptoms for a considerable time?
