Walking without a hip joint

@cheryl99

My hip was removed 2 years ago. I had a great Doctor At UNC Chapel Hill. Hip was removed because of radiation damage and a infection caused by a cat bite. I was in a brace for 9 weeks after surgery to let scar tissue build and support the leg. While I was in a wheelchair for a while, I went to therapy and worked really hard with my goal being able to walk. Today I can walk very well with a walker. I use a rolling walker when outside the home and can use a cane for short walks like going into a doctor office or restaurant. I know there was doubt as to whether I would be able to walk but I tried to maintain a positive attitude and faith that God would allow me to walk. I do wear a raised shoe because my right leg is a inch and a quarter shorter because of the hip removal and the dead bone removed. I believe this was a factor in my walking. I will not be able to have a new hip because of the damage to the bones because of radiation.

@cheryl99 Congratulations Cheryl your a warrior for sure

cheryl99, Was the hip they removed a prosthetic hip, or was it your own femur ball and pelvic socket? By the way, I am very interested in getting your UNC surgeon’s name so that my surgeon can contact him. Thank you.

cheryl99, Can you also provide the name of the physical therapy service you used? Thanks

cheryl99, Sorry for all the questions, but I keep thinking of more things. Can you explain more about the brace you wore for 9 weeks? How was it attached? Was it’s purpose only to immobilize? How difficult was it to stand, use a walker, or sit during this time? Thank you very much for your help.
