When to take my Prolia

Posted by dibriel @dibriel, 3 days ago

my second Prolia injection is Schaefer January with a rheumatologist. In February I have a new patient appointment with an endocrinologist. That office can’t advise me. Should I take the shot from the rheumatologist and then switch over?

dibriel: I have been advised by my endocrinologist that keeping to the 6 month schedule of having one's Prolia injections is very important. That being said, I have stretched it before to seven months and a DEXA scan a year afterward didn't show any bone loss. I'm sure you've been told that your bone quality degenerates quickly if you discontinue Prolia and don't immediate transition to another therapy. Your conundrum would be this: The endocrinologist will not order the Prolia until your initial consultation with him/her. I would say that if your appt. with the rheumatologist was in late January, and the consult with the rheumatologist was early February you might be able to wait. Perhaps if the medical staff at the endocrinologist's office could tell you how long it takes for them to get the Prolia shot after it is ordered after your consultation the timing could work. I would not delay over 7 months, and to reitereate, that is not the recommendation. (Even though I did it once b/c of covid.) Make sure you're on the endocrinologist's cancellation list. Maybe you could get in earlier. The easiest way to go, of course, is to just get the shot one more time with the rheumatologist and then transition to the endocrinologist.

@mkoch the ending office won’t give me any advice until I’m actually under their care. Sound like I will take the one at the rheumatologist. Thanks!
