@reneewny Welcome to Connect. I feel for your son and your family. An injury like this changes everything overnight and affects the family who become caregivers. I don’t know what is possible, but there is research into recovery after spinal cord injury. There have been some devices that can bridge over a damaged area of the spinal cord to transmit the signal. Some patients have been able to learn to walk again with a lot of therapy. Mayo has had some research in regenerative medicine for spine injuries and a surgeon involved with that has moved to the University of Chicago.

Do you have pets? Dogs and cats can be a big comfort and help with emotional issues. If your son is able to recover enough to have some use of his arms, he may be able to get a service dog. I had a disabled friend who headed a chapter of Canine Companions for Independence and I was amazed at what her dog could do for her. She was in wheelchair after a diving accident and breaking her neck as a teenager. She also adapted and taught everyone else how to be positive. She described herself as “handi-capable “ not handicapped.

I know you have a lot on your plate and that can be quite overwhelming. I hope that Connect will be a source of comfort to you.
