Medical cannabis vs Ambien?

Posted by patriciaschulz1950 @patriciaschulz1950, Oct 11 8:39pm

I am 75 years old - using 5 mg of Ambien (successfully) at night to help me sleep for six hours. I have chronic neuropathy pain in my feet , ankles and calves. I have been using for about 12 years and it lets me sleep through pain for 5-6 hours. I am tired all the next day. Cramping pain in my legs and feet usually wake me up or assuming the 5 mg of Ambien are leaving my system. I used to wake up refreshed and able to take on chronic pain for the day, however now I am so tired the next day. I would like to wean off Ambien and try pill or edible cannabis hoping this would work equally or better and give me more energy next morning. Thoughts? Any insights? Thanks!

Hyland's CalmX is a mild otc pill for restlessness and sleeplessness. It's very mild, but it calms me down when life gets hectic and anxious. I've been using it for years.

I have done medical gummies for 10 years to sleep,
due to my neuropathy. It works!
As you know this is a chronic pain that worsens at night. After 8 miserable weeks on Gabapentin this summer I stopped cold. I had found research and studies with positive pain reduction using R- Alpha Lipoic Acid with B1 and began taking a therapeutic dose- 2400mg. Total per day.
By one week I was having a remarkable reduction in pain.
It actually helps repair the myelin sheath so nerves are cushioned.
If you have a traumatic reason or diabetes causing neuropathy it may work. I am beyond happy for less pain!

I am going to try gummy’s- Rick Simpson brand. I have nothing to lose especially at age 75- except money. I hate throwing it away trying to find something that helps. As far as supplements I have no idea where to start. Wait until I get my blood tests in FEB 2026. And I know my PCP wil just do stand blood work - should I be asking her to do any more detailed blood tests. She doesn’t sound very interested in my dilemma just upset I have eliminated most of my Pharmaceutical meds. Maybe I should just take a senior vitamin?? Thoughts
What do you do when your PCP isn’t interested?

I was just prescribed Ambien because I felt that Trazodone and THC weren't working for me. I took my first dose of Ambien last night and it was the worst night's sleep I've had in a long time. I was tossing and turning and having all sorts of weird, racing thoughts. I've decided to back to Trazodone and THC. Ambien isn't for me.

@ericamonique with most drugs a certain (usually low) percentage of patients will have what is called a paradoxic reaction to the drug. In essence they have the opposite effect of the indented one. It sounds like this may be the case for you.

Consider talking to your doctor about having ambien put in your allergy list. This will ensure it does not inadvertently get prescribed again.

Proceed with caution taking any meds from the ambient family, for example lunesta

Sorry Patricia for what you are going through. If you do use cannabis edibles, start small. Unlike smoking cannabis, edibles take longer to have an impact. There is a tendency then to eat more. Please try to avoid that.

UI've used medical marijuana for anxiety and find the THC to be too much. All it did was make me extremely thirsty and, worse - paranoid. Please just use caution.

@ericamonique did you take 5mg or 10 mg? Ambien seems to work well for me but gummies normally work well also.

@ericamonique Ambien doesn’t do anything for me either and actually does the opposite. I’ve tried every sleep med available and finding THC added to either my muscle relaxer or Benedryl (pm products) or hydroxyzine work the best. Obviously check with your doctor b4 any combo ** Good luck staying asleep 😴

@vstevens250 My Ambien prescription is for 5 mg but as others have pointed out, I had the opposite reaction. Rather than sleep, it made me agitated. Thanks everyone!

Its just horrible not being able to sleep. I can normally fall asleep but wake up an hour or two later and cant go back to sleep. Part of my problem is TKR surgery and being older and just pain in my body :-). I have steered away from prescription drugs until now when I tried Ambien. 5 Mg did knock me out pretty well but I still woke up a few hours later. My doctor recently prescribed Doxepin but I took for just one night because I felt horrible the next day. My body usually does the opposite of what it is suppose to. I have taken different gummies normally CBD/CBN/THC. I have learned recently that you have to be careful of the strain of THC they use in the gummies. Stavia strain keeps you awake and indica is more for sleeping. It worked amazing for a couple years and now it seems to not be working as well. When I had my TKR and was also on pain meds for a couple months it seems I slept a bit better but even pain medication would keep me awake.
Oh my goodness. I asked my doctor recently about Trazadone and he said Ambien or Doxepin has far less side effects. So tonight it will be a gummy. I purchase them on line from highly ranked sites since I dont have a medical card.
