Mattress recommendations

Hi! This is a very broad, open-ended question, but I'm hoping you might be able to help. I'm going to start looking for a new mattress for my bed because it does a horrible job at supporting my sacrum tailbone and low back. I get severe pain in those areas and having a bed where I feel like I'm constantly sinking in is not helping. I obviously want a mattress that is firmer and more supportive, but I have no idea what to try, and what to look for, and what to avoid. Is there a particular brand that really works for you, and what materials work best for pain. I currently have a twin bed, and my mattress is probably 15 years old, memory foam with gel, with the mattress topper made from those same materials.
Thanks for your suggestions! Amanda

I’m 76, have scoliosis, a lot of arthritis, a very old mattress, and recently, a lot of pain upon awakening, even after a short time in bed.
Mattress companies promise great exchange/return policies.
Please reply if you have experience trying to return/exchange a mattress, especially bad experiences and/or advice for avoiding them.
…glad to read about several good experiences, but would like to know how common that is, especially if more than one exchange is requested.
Thanks!

I totally agree! I put off purchasing a new mattress for a long time just for that reason. My body is so picky that I'm almost sure what's going to feel good in the store won't feel great at home, no matter how long I lay on it in the store. I comment stating mattress firm was very cooperative and agreeable with a return, but I'm hoping to care about more experiences as well. Thanks for your comment!

Everyone has different needs in a mattress, so it’s nearly impossible to rely on recommendations. My husband and I had tempurpedic mattresses with adjustable base for years. We have 2 twins pushed together on adjustable bases. Anyhow, he has always hated his mattress with constant complaints of shoulder pain, while I like it…however I really think it’s the adjustable base that is the game changer. Last year he bought a prana karma elite hybrid plus 13 mattress and loves it. In fact, if I get a new one, I think I would get that also. We call it the cloud. It provides lots of support, but so comfy. I mostly sleep on my back and he on his side and this mattress works for both of us. However, everyone is very different. Some people hate tempurpedic, some love them for instance. The pranasleep karma elite hybrid may be worth testing out.

@mslw I was given the option in writing to return the mattress within 30 days, though I didn't have to return it, but I did have to purchase (for $10) a mattress cover for obvious reasons. I have a friend who did have to exchange her mattress and she had no problem doing so.

It would be good to know where your friend bought the mattress she exchanged and where you bought your mattress.
Thanks!

Saatva. Best mattress I have ever owned x3 now; super customer service.

Sister with low back issues slept on one of my Saatvas just twice; went back home and tossed out mattresses on both her beds and bought Saatvas. Now when I visit her it feels like home!! lol

I can't say enough good about these mattresses and their customer service.

No I do not have a financial interest. lol

Hi! Thank you so much for your reply! The tempur pedic mattresses are definitely on my list to try. I remember they felt comfortable the last time I went mattress shopping YEARS ago, and I really like them. I decided against getting one because of the price, but right now I'd pay a million dollars for just the right mattress.
Thanks again for the tip and I'm glad your mattress brought you relief.

Sorry for the late response. There is a warranty period for most beds. As long as you use a protective cover provided by the manufacturer or seller, I think you can return some beds within 30, 60, 90 days. I know Tempurpedic used to do this.

@slarson14

Apologies in advance for the rude question, but aren't they terribly expensive? (Saatva)

Is it better to do firm or what?

@krisingle1 They are not terribly expensive. Firm is best, yes.

A luxury firm is about $1600.
This is a lifetime guarantee mattress.
It also has a 365 day trial period; if you don't like the mattress for any reason, they refund your money; or trade it for a different firmness model.

I have had a bad lower back for 40 years. I have always bought Beauty Rest mattresses and requested “firm”. It has made a huge difference in my comfort level for my back! I can tell that I need a new one now and hate to put out the money for it but I know that that is the best one for me.
