Severe pain after stage2 y90 treatment
5 days ago I had y90 embolization to the liver for metastatic nonfunctional NET. Severe pain and vomiting after procedure. Had to be admitted for 3 days. At home now. Still in pain and constipated. Stopped opioid use yesterday. Pain was so bad I was screaming coming out of the procedure. Anyone else experience this?

She was diagnosed with HCC liver cancer in the summer of 2024 and has since had one y90 treatment in june 2024 and then had a follow up, aggressive clean up y90 just this past august 2025.
It’s been about 7 weeks since the procedure and it seems like the pain has only gotten worse. She’s been in and out of the ER and her endoscopy shows only dead cells so while it is good that cancer has not spread, she’s still incredibly inflamed.
Searching for answers to take the pain away as it has been incredibly de-habilitating.

I'm so sorry that your mom has not found any help for this pain. Perhaps this would be a good time to get a second opinion. It is always appropriate for a patient to seek a second opinion when they have a persistent issue that their current medical team can't address.
Do you know of a multi-disciplinary medical center that you can contact for a consultation? Mayo Clinic would be a good place to consider (appointment information http://mayocl.in/1mtmR63). If an appointment at Mayo is not possible, a consultation with a university medical school might be appropriate.
Have you considered getting a second opinion?

We are exploring it, but we are in California so unfortunately cannot visit a Mayo Clinic. I'll see if we can get help with UCSF or Stanford Medical.

2 Reactions@jespi It seems to me the interventional radiologist should be able to explain any side effects! I had many tumors but had a healthy liver. Maybe her liver condition was more fragile and couldn’t handle such high dose radiation as well? If you haven’t had a conversation with him I would reach out. Good Luck

2 ReactionsI had bland embolization to liver in Jan 2024. High fever and nausea for days. Didn't eat anything. There was also a burning feeling on the outside of the right leg that still appears from time to time, and is numb most of the time..

1 Reaction@kevinmonroemi Thanks for the concern! She also mostly has a healthy liver as well, just a large tumor - around 9cm. The center was already mostly killed with the first y90, but this second one seemed to have a smaller margin between the liver and the esophagus so I'm suspecting that there might have been some leakage in radiation between the tumor and stomach.
I'll reach out to her oncologist for more details. Thanks again for responding!
