Mattress recommendations

Hi! This is a very broad, open-ended question, but I'm hoping you might be able to help. I'm going to start looking for a new mattress for my bed because it does a horrible job at supporting my sacrum tailbone and low back. I get severe pain in those areas and having a bed where I feel like I'm constantly sinking in is not helping. I obviously want a mattress that is firmer and more supportive, but I have no idea what to try, and what to look for, and what to avoid. Is there a particular brand that really works for you, and what materials work best for pain. I currently have a twin bed, and my mattress is probably 15 years old, memory foam with gel, with the mattress topper made from those same materials.
Thanks for your suggestions! Amanda

I'm on my 2nd Tempurpedic and would highly recommend. Not too firm, not too soft and supports my arthritic back well, including following spine surgery. That said, mattress preferences vary a lot from person to person.

Having many spine/bone problems from feet to head I did a ton of research keeping my under $4k price point. LOVE my Stearns and Foster hybrid ultra plush mattress with an adjustable base. Been sleeping on it for 3 years and I wish I could have gotten it sooner. Takes the pressure off my spine and helps sleep immensely. Highly recommended! Best to you ❤️

Thank you for the suggestion! I'm really glad it worked out for you. I added it to my list of mattresses to try 😁

Hi Amanda,

Please, please get a new bed asap!

We've been using Tempur-Pedic for years, always firm. It does adjust to the contours of your body's shape. Personally, I can only sleep on a firm mattress, without any spring coils. That said, it's not good if you can only sleep on one side. I had my shoulder replaced and after sleeping on my back for two weeks (ugh), My right hip gets sore from sleeping on it all night. So it's fine when I can sleep on both sides.

The only other bed that looks very interesting is Sleep Number, where you can adjust the firmness and temperature, on each side of some beds. If I didn't already own a Tempur-Pedic, I'd take a serious look at Sleep Number.

Please let us know what you do!

Joe

Hey joe! Thank you so much for your reply. Yeah for a long time I've only been able to sleep on my back because the pain in my legs gets too severe for me to sleep on the side. But now the nerve pain in my back has gotten super bad and laying on it constantly is making it worse. Tempurpedic is definitely very popular with everyone, so I will certainly be trying that soon. I will keep you posted!

I find it very dfficult to choose the "right" mattress, which is why I postpone the purchase for too long. For me, laying on a mattress in a showroom only rules out the MUCH-too-hard or MUCH-too-soft. For decades I bought affordable (but recommended) mattresses-in-a-box, which I replaced every several years. Then, my needs became more complex. Shoulders want SOFT, lumbar wants FIRM. Hips (both replaced) want COMFY. After doing a LOT of online research, I visited the Saatva store, which offers a full year trial period and "white glove" service. Five months ago I bought a queen-size "plush" zoned mattress for a bit less than $2K (which, frankly, was above my price point). The middle third of the mattress is firmer, while the top and bottom thirds are softer. Still in the trial period, no complaints.

Thank you so much for sharing that with me. The Saatva is on my list of mattresses that I definitely want to try. I'm really anxious to try their Rx mattress or the classic. Both of them sounded right up my alley!

From what I read, horse hair mattresses are the new and up and coming thing. Apparently get rave reviews but very expensive (out of my price range)

This is what AI says

The natural properties of horse hair make it an excellent material for mattresses. It wicks away moisture, keeping the mattress dry and hygienic. Its resilience provides firm support, which can be beneficial for spinal alignment and overall sleep quality.

You are very welcome Bow. Going into the shoulder replacement rehab, I dreaded having to sleep propped up on my back. Two months later and I love it.

There are pillows designed to keep your cervical spine in proper position, sleeping on your side or back. Hopefully you can find one of those. And even though I like sleeping up on my back propped up, by morning my lower back is pretty stiff.

All the best to you, friend!

I’m 76, have scoliosis, a lot of arthritis, a very old mattress, and recently, a lot of pain upon awakening, even after a short time in bed.
Mattress companies promise great exchange/return policies.
Please reply if you have experience trying to return/exchange a mattress, especially bad experiences and/or advice for avoiding them.
…glad to read about several good experiences, but would like to know how common that is, especially if more than one exchange is requested.
Thanks!

So glad to have found this post! I need a new mattress too, and I've gleaned some to start with from it. I have an adjustable frame, so assume somewhat limited choices.. I have acid reflux and must sleep with my head and shoulders raised. To recap- I'll be looking at tempura pedicure, Stearns and Foster hybrid ultra plush and checking out mattress firm ax well as saatva stores. If you have additional suggestions, please reply. Thanks!
