How did you handle bladder spasms after catheter came out?
My husband just got his catheter out today and is experiencing bladder spasm-like symptoms. Tenderness everywhere and some stinging and a full bladder feeling. It gets better after he pees ( and yay! He pees!) but comes back. he feels bloated and swollen and not good. 1. Is it “Normal”? As in, did you experience this? And 2. What did you do? Take ibuprofen? Back to the Oxybutenin? Or just wait it out.

Not quite the same but I spasmed when the foley was inserted when I was hospitalized for renal failure due to PCa (unknown at the time). Very painful. I was given an antispasmodic via IV. I'm sorry, I tried to find which one in hospital records but was unsuccessful. Once released and the foley removed, I had minor spasm symptoms but nothing like the pain that occurred with the catheter in place. Only lasted a couple of days and resolved on its own. Best wishes for a rapid solution.

2 ReactionsI didn't have what I would call spasms but yes, pain, frequency and leaking etc. Everything gets better; it just takes time. I am 6 weeks out, and it is a gradual process. The improvement is rather dramatic over the first couple weeks and then slows, but is consistent. The first night I was up to pee all the time. And I still had that gassy crampy feel for at least a month and everything still doesn't feel the way it did. He is probably on a blood thinner so he should not add ibuprofen. Take tylenol. I was recommended warm compresses on my abdomen if things acted up and to walk and move as much as I could tolerate. The bladder is going to have to relearn what full is and how to respond. Right now the irritation is triggering the feeling of need to urinate even though there is not a lot there. They had me stop Oxybutin right at the time my Foley came out. I am not sure why. This was at Mayo.
I had retention and terrible pain and ended up in ER with a new foley for another week
I wish I know what would help, my husband did not have any spasms either while having catheter or after it came out but maybe you can try heating pads on his lower abdomen for 20 min or so and see how it goes. Also maybe you can try some herbal calming teas, like mint and chamomile. His bladder tissue is possibly irritated and needs some time to calm down. Definitely avoid spicy food, alcohol, and caffeine. If that does not improve in day or two ask your doctor to check his urine for infection - it can happen. Actually my husband was advised to take antibiotic on a day of catheter removal - it was standard protocol at his hospital.
I hope that your husband is feeling much better today < 3.
This is so helpful. We are just behind you— almost at 2 weeks. My spouse says the bloated, tender feeling is the worst of all. The discomfort and swelling of his penis and scrotum— it’s all been good and yet these “little” things are hard to get over. Yesterday I thought we would never make it. Today is better. Hang in there. You are an inspiration.
Thanks for comment. Sorry this happened. Sounds horrid
My husband has had a foley catheter in for 2 mos. now. He has been experiencing what we think is a bladder spasm - he doesnt feel anything but urine leaks out through a pad and his clothing. Does anyone have any advice on how to contain the urine so it doesnt leak out of clothing etc. Thanks so much for your help.
Had the same issue. Was prescribed Trospium. Spasms went away. Also cleaned up diet as well.
Gemtessa may help
Sorry to hear this. I was prescribed the Oxybutenin from the day I left the hospital so it would be ready for me when the catheter came out 11 days later. My urologists still wanted me to have minimal driving for a total of 2-3 weeks post surgery and at least one week after catheter removal. This was wise. I felt beat down, pummeled and assaulted after the surgery...such a "deep" pain. The good news is that the spasming will go away fairly quickly. He'll most likely be incontinent and in a diaper or wearing pads for at least 3 months, unless he is one of the lucky few who do so less. It took me a full four months. At 6 months I am 99% continent, but still have dribble accidents, so I still wear a diaper under my boxers (pads don't work in boxers).
