Which is the best statin to lower cholesterol

Posted by bigjohnscho @bigjohnscho, Jul 17 2:48am

I suffer from PN and stopped my simvastatin some years ago but my cholesterol has slowly crept up to a worrying level. My GP wants to put me on Avorstatin but Iam sure this could make my PN worse. Has anyone experienced the same problem and is there a statin that is proven not to affect or worsen Peripheral Neuropathy.

Hello,
I also have peripheral neuropathy. I avoided taking any cholesterol medication due to the serious side effects of muscle and joints pains I had taking them. However, I was introduced to Ezetimibe 10mg by a nurse practitioner a year ago. My experience with this drug thus far, has been far better. I know all prescription drugs, though helpful, may have some negatives, depending upon individual situations. So, it would be a good thing to check with a doctor, pharmacist or research.
Good luck.

I have taken statins for years . Once my endocrinologist added ZETIA. My HDL skyrocketed and my LDL plummeted.

I am now on 10mg Simvastatin and 5 mg Zetia. I know it’s still a statin, but the dose is do low it does not affect me at all.

If you must take a statin, only agree to It with generic ZETIA.

I went to a new cardiologist this week and he called it a miracle drug.

He was very pleased with my numbers and said he was pleased I was taking it. I am getting tested to see if I can remove them completely. I don’t know how bad my “mild” CAD actually is.

I don’t use a statin (I react badly to them), but I read a study that if you drink a shot glassful of pomegranate juice every day it cleans out your arteries like roto-rooter. Don’t remember which university did the study. Pom is good for you, so it couldn’t hurt.

I've been taking pravastatin for several years, and my blood pressure and cholesterol levels are fine.

@gen55
Any side effects and how much did it lower your LDL?

I was prescribed that because I can’t take statins due to my hereditary neuropathy. He said it would only lower my LDL 10 points so I haven’t tried since I’m not sure 10 points is worth side effects. Thanks for any info.

My doc is a real hawk on LDL. He is putting many of his patients, including me, on the PCSK9 inhibitor called
Leqvio or Incliseran. It's a shot you get twice a year. Took my LDL way down. Take a minimal dose of rosuvastatin a couple of times a week. Here is a list of the PCSK9 inhibitors:

PCSK9 inhibitors are a class of medications used to lower cholesterol levels. Here is a list of currently available PCSK9 inhibitors: Alirocumab (Praluent), Evolocumab (Repatha), and Inclisiran (Leqvio).

I took lipitor and it made me sick, vomiting, diarrhea. I stopped taking it but was left with nerve damage resulting in neuralgia. Repatha is keeping my cholesterol where it belongs. It is an injection every other week. But I take other prescriptions for the neuralgia, lorazepam is the most helpful. I take only what I need when needed. I've been on it for 20 years and take less than prescribed.
