Which is the best statin to lower cholesterol
I suffer from PN and stopped my simvastatin some years ago but my cholesterol has slowly crept up to a worrying level. My GP wants to put me on Avorstatin but Iam sure this could make my PN worse. Has anyone experienced the same problem and is there a statin that is proven not to affect or worsen Peripheral Neuropathy.

@heisenberg34 I have stopped taking Atorvastin and I am trying almond nuts. No results yet but I just don’t trust Atorvastin. My GP put me on Atorvastin without discussing it with me. I am currently researching other alternatives
@bigjohnscho I wish you well! Thanks. Keep us updated.
Hello,
I’m so sorry about what’s going on with you and I can definitely sympathize as I went through the same thing.
After many years on statins, my current primary care physician switched me to a non statin for cholesterol. I see my doctor this Thursday for a lipid panel test to see how the medication is working.
If you’re going back to the same doctor, I suggest you ask about non statin medications to control your cholesterol.
Take care and I wish you the best,
gus
Hello to all,
Statins are a problem when it comes to peripheral neuropathy. There are non statin medications available on the market. I suggest asking your respective primary care physicians about them. I am currently on one of them and going to my doctor this Thursday for a lipid panel test to check if the medication is working or not.
Take care and best of wishes,
gus
Thanks for that information. Can you tell me the non statin you are currently on it will me a starting point for the conversation with my GP.
Thanks John
@gus0557 which non statin cholesterol medication are you on? I may need to go back on medication for my rising cholesterol levels.
It seems like there are quite a few discussions in regard to certain statins contributing to neuropathy, possibly even being the root cause. I bring this up because it seems like my neuropathy appeared just about the same time that I went on Atorvastatin. It would be great to hear from those of you who had this problem, stopped the statins and noticed significant reduction in neuropathy. Thank you.
Hello,
Sorry, I never mention the name of any medication I take for the simple reason that different bodies react differently to different medications. Moreover, I never want anyone telling me “you said so or so”. I’m sorry. All I do with everyone is tell what’s out there without naming and strongly suggest they connect with their primary care physician who should know their full medical history and what may or may not work keeping in mind the side effects. If someone is not satisfied with their doctor, they should think about changing her or him.
Again, I apologize for not mentioning the name of the non statin cholesterol medication. And by the way, this past February, my primary care physician told me to completely stop all medications and supplements and only keep taking the low dose blood pressure medication and the non statin cholesterol medication. She is a great doctor who is quite aware of my medical history.
Another suggestion is you might wish to try a google search for non statin cholesterol medications and see what you may find online.
Best wishes always and take care,
gus
I can't handle any medicine with statins in it, so I'm on Rapatha and it's helped me a lot.
@heisenberg34 short answer is no. I have stopped the Atorvastin
