Penile Clamp Bleeding

Posted by mhordes @mhordes, 2 days ago

Has anyone had this experience? Last week prior to my 7th Proton Prostrate Radiation treatment the techs asked me to use a penile clamp since I’ve had a hard time keeping a full bladder on the table. I also am on Plavix blood thinner. Well had an explosion right after the treatment with huge bleeding/ freaked me out! Ended up in the ER for 7 hrs and conclusion was I had UTI infection? Which turned out not to be true based on the urine culture result. I assume it was the clamp? Have quite a bit burning while urinating and on cipro just in case. Anybody had to go through this?

I used a clamp for a few years. Never had any problems like you Describe. In fact, I have one on now and I don’t even feel it and I forgot I had it on so I’m glad you reminded me, so I can take it off.

The Weisner clamp has t different sizes in the package. They sell it at Amazon. Not sure if it will work better than what you have now, but you seem to have problems with that.

I had 28 sessions of proton radiation and never experienced that.

How many ounces of water are they having you drink? & how many minutes prior to treatment?

Are you undergoing initial radiation or is this salvage radiation?

You might want to check out that blood thinner. My husband was given blood thinner the night of the RARP and he started bleeding from the main incision. It stopped soon after he was administered a blood thickener!

> Is there a reason why they need this to occur 1 hour prior? If they can shorten the time to 1/2-hour (like mine was), you may be able to hold more water longer. Ask them…..

In the weeks leading up to my radiation treatments, I practiced every day. By the time of my first treatment, I had the routine down to a ritual.

For me, that was 18oz of water to drink 30 minutes prior to each session. So, I emptied my bladder 45 minutes prior to treatment time, started the 40 minute drive to the radiation center, 10 minutes into the drive drank 18oz of water, arrived at the treatment center 30 minutes later, and immediately had the treatments.

I never had problems holding that little amount of water for that short of time.

Immediately after each session, then I would use the restroom, change back to my street clothes, drive to the gym for strength-training/cardio, use the restroom again, and then return home.

It worked like clockwork every time and never caused an issue.

(You’ll have to work with them to find a way that works for you. It’s about shared decision-making.)
