Walking is beginning to be difficult

Posted by gen55 @gen55, 3 days ago

In the last 4 months I have suddenly found it very painful to walk. As I walk, ive noticed that my legs feel heavy and actually hurt to where I have to sit down a few minutes to rest. Do any of you have this issue? I'm guessing that the neuropathy is progressing which scares me at this point.

My walking is very painful and tiring. I tried to ride my bike this week and I was able to but hills made me fatigued. It didn’t hurt though and my legs were okay later.❤️

Yes, walking has become difficult to the extent that I'm thinking of ways to get groceries brought to the house that doesn't cost an arm and a leg. I find I can ride an exercycle w/o the difficulties of walking.

Walking is difficult for me for two reasons: I have declining strength and stamina in my legs and I have very poor balance. Consequently, distance, terrain, obstacles and visibility all contribute to my reduced sense of safety. A walking stick and/or a companion to lean on, provide me with confidence. Good lighting and my new glasses are a must at all times!
Increasing physical activity and slow deep breathing are a must!

Good for you for figuring out what it takes to keep on keeping on! Keep those muscles going!

Have you had small fiber neuropathy biopsy diagnosis or EMG/nerve conduction study of large fibers by a neurologist? What were you officially diagnosed with?

Have you ever had a MRI of your cervical and lumbar spine?

I have similar difficulties with walking. The happiness and the feeling that your legs could just about buckle under you is worse sometimes than others, it’s more pronounced if there’s any incline walking on the flat is so much easier. I go to Aqua fitness most weekdays and hope that it’s working But with peripheral neuropathy the only thing you can do is try there’s no measurement to say if my exercise is helping and I really don’t want to stop just in case it is and suddenly things get worse don’t be scared it is what it is and you could have a lot of other worse diagnoses than this. Good luck

Happiness should be replaced with heaviness

@dlydailyhope I had x-rays of cervical and lumbar spine. I was diagnosed with radiculopathy and neuropathy. Two different doctors, 2 different diagnoses.

Hello,
Sorry for what you're going through and I can definitely sympathize with you.
I've been experiencing the same thing the last few months and it's getting worse. Yes, the condition we have is a progressive one but each of us experiences it differently depending on the entire condition of their body. In the case of idiopathics, unfortunately I'm not really sure if there's anything out there that will help. As for myself, I've been learning to put up with whatever happens since I fully realize that it's a progressive condition at this time. Unfortunately, I really don't have any advice for you besides checking with either your primary care physician or your neurologist, if you have one.
Best wishes and have a serene day,
gus

X-rays do not show soft tissues, spinal cord, nerve roots, etc. and not used alone to diagnose neuropathy and radiculopathy. That requires MRI and EMG/nerve conduction studies plus small fiber neuropathy skin punch biopsy.

What did the 2 doctors recommend for next steps? Are you working with an orthopedic spine specialist and neurologist/neuromuscular specialist?
