@lucyvt Welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect! You’ve been on prednisone for 30 years?! That is hard to imagine! How well did your body tolerate it? Did you do anything special to keep the daily side effects away. I’m thinking of cataracts, sleepless nights, spontaneous fractures or weight gain. I shouldn’t be asking all these questions, I should just be welcoming you to Mayo Clinic Connect! We have a lively group so I’m sure you will fit in!

@becsbuddy Hello Becky. Thanks for the reply. I have experienced all the issues that you mentioned - the weight gain is horrible - but since I kept failing on so many others and was restricted by other issues, I did not have much in the way of alternatives. I did not develop cataracts until recently and only in one eye. That eye had a macular hole and the dr told me the surgery to repair it can trigger exacerbation of cataracts. So, two eye surgeries on one year was a bit much! I am glad my prednisone dosage is very low now and hope to keep it that way.

Hi Becky, I too have been on prednisone for at least 30 yrs. I've had Rheumatoid Arthritis for 40 yrs, diagnosed in my early 30s. Steroids were a Godsend for me and I believe if it helps then use it. As you can imagine, through 40 yrs I've been on many drugs, to include gold injections. Now that I'm in my 70s my body has all the side effects of steroids, but I would not go back and change my medical treatment. Steroids allowed me to lead a successful, productive life and not be crippled early like some of my ancestors. So life for me is not the best now, but I have no regrets.
