Has anyone tried Capsaicin (Qutenza) for neuropathy in their feet?

Posted by Steve @stevebern, Aug 17, 2022

Hello everyone, I’m not sure if I’m allowed to post a link like this, and if I’m not, please remove it, but… someone (non-medical person) sent this to me as a possible treatment.

I have idiopathic non-diabetic neuropathy of the feet, and would definitely try this (although the way it gets applied indicates it could be harmful if any of it gets on any other area), but at this point I’ll try anything.

So, has anyone tried this? It seems to be an ingredient in pepper spray, if you can believe it.

BenGay works for me but it also causes heat in the upper leg area. It's a fair trade.

I use off capsaicin cream that is sold at Wal-Mart by the other creams such as Biofreeze. I use a silicone glove to apply. You don't want to get it in your eyes or nose area!

My podiatrist is researching the cream's efficacy but today my neurologist told me he did not think that this product would help my neuropathy. I am in the idiopathic category and he told me that I had a mild case, which I kind of agree with, as I have no pain. He did raise the possibility that antibiotics which I took for sinus infection may have done the damage to my nerves, but he was not conclusive about this. I still came away optimistic--I gained two pounds--and am hoping that this might mean that muscle strength is coming back. I was given a blood test for celiac disease -my neuro doctor explained that this can cause neuropathy. I guess it is important to have these tests and cover all bases. In the meantime, I remain ultra-cautious about Rx drugs.

I could not slept at night with the burning pain in my feet

Not wanting to take opioid I decided to try Bio Freez. I rub on my toes and top and bottom. Then I put socks on. No more sleepless nights. Whatever works. Try it. My testa show all my nerves in left leg are damaged. Good luck in all you try. Blessings

So what treatment did you take by which you are gaining muscle strength?

Physical therapy 3x per week consisting of cardio and leg lifts with weights strapped to my ankles. I also stretch every morning via a TV guided show and do squats when I can. My legs no longer feel wobbly and my hands no longer have the sensation of being weak. I do have to be cautious as I have a weak lower back so I can't overdo.

I have neuropathy and CRPS in my feet and I am on my 2nd round of Qutenza treatments. This one seems to help a little bit. My neurologist told me I should see good improvements after my 3rd treatment if it's going to work. But we are also using Pregamblin and Duloxetine to treat the nerve issues in my feet. The Qutenza seems to be helping take the edge off after two treatments, so I will post an update after the third. I will warn you, the treatments are not fun. The burning from the Qutenza patches goes on for a couple of days after treatment. Those first couple days after treatment are worse than the pain I normally have but fads and my overpain level is dropping. I really think they are helping.

From the comments I'd say it sounds as if side effects are just not worth it. I have serious autoimmune disorder that has left me with numerous blood clots and damaged veins/circulation. This has caused my left foot to suffer serious pain, numbness, tingling, etc... I hurt non stop from am to pm. What I found works best is lidocaine creams, though I need to use more than once daily. I also do physical therapeutic exercises to my foot, I noticed this is the best relief, but it takes a few days about 2 before I start noticing the relief. I hope this helps, and may God touch you and free your pain.
