Kneeling After TKA

Posted by karenheller @karenheller, Jul 21, 2025

Has anyone been able to kneel after TKA? I’m only nine months post-op so I haven’t tried to yet. If I knew I’d be able to kneel someday, I’d consider doing my other knee. If not, I won’t because I don’t think I could get up after falling if I couldn’t kneel on at least one knee.

I must be fortunate as I’ve been kneeling without any problems. I kneel at church, in the garden but limit the time kneeling on a hard floor. Right TKR 11/21 & Left TKR 11/23.

I am able to kneel (both knees replaced) but it is more uncomfortable on hard surface. I look strange getting up from the floor but am able to do it.

I have not been able to kneel since my double knee replacement. The person that recommended my surgeon was a dancer and that was a question I asked. She dropped to her knees with no pain. I was so looking forward to getting back to yoga. My right knee was never as good as my left and I went back for a number a years and their was nothing they could see that was wrong with the knee. I went for 2 second opinions. First doc said total knee replacement. The second said the only thing he saw was that the knee didn't line up exactly and there was some overhang and a lot of scar tissue. I don't want another surgery. I can walk much better and do so every day. I tried chair yoga...not the same experience.

@I get that reply from the doc. Everything seems normal on rechecks, ex-rays, but we have changed, our older bodies do not click back as we hoped! Keep on kimmy1970 !

I had my six week followup with my surgeon three days ago. I asked him if I had any limitations at this time and he said no.

I went to a railroad park here in Scottsdale with my son, daughter in law and 5 and 3 year old grandkids yesterday. There is a small railroad ride there. I got in it with my kids but as you noted, I did look strange climbing in and out.

I think in my case it is a combination of old age (80), stenosis in my spine and nine months of mostly inactivity before my surgery. I can try to deal with the last but not the first. I have a top neurosurgeon for the stenosis but I would rather avoid spine surgery if I can.

Both knees done 10-12 years ago. Have never been able to kneel without several pillows under each knee. Still hurts but I can do it.
