Diverticulitis and constipation
First, to say, thank you all for being here for support and helping make sense of things! I was diagnosed with diverticulitis last November, have been fine since January, and am trying to make sense what seems to be divergent views from drs. When I was flaring Nov/Dec 2023, the GI drs (saw both in the practice) said I couldn't make the flare worse or better with particular foods; I could eat whatever I wanted. They said, if I was constipated, certain foods would cause pain, but again, wouldn't alter the progression of the disease. The docs in this practice very firmly believe prohibitions against foods are wrong; they believe studies bear this out. More recently, my primary dr - an internist - has said something very different. (I think.) She says to avoid constipation at all costs, that little bits of fecal matter (She called them fecalites. No idea how it's spelled) trapped in the pockets set flares in motion. So food does matter, but I believe, to her way of thinking, it's only those foods that would promote constipation.
What do your docs say? Thanks so much for sharing your wisdom and experience. Much, much appreciated.

@cartwrib
Thanks for mentioning the Weight Watchers app. That sounds like a helpful tool in keeping track of your daily food intake. It sounds like it would act as a food diary, which can be helpful in tracking food triggers that cause symptoms.

I'm sorry I am sooooo slow to reply. I can't keep up with online conversations! I've recently had a colonoscopy and a CT scan, which both looked good. I would have thought I had a flare up just prior to these tests, so now I'm not sure. Since I thought I was heading into a flare - persistent left side pain and ache (but still very low on pain scale) - I put myself on a liquid diet for three days. The GI doc thinks this likely did the trick -resulting in those good test results. And I felt better after the liquid diet. I do metamucil twice a day. I'm going to try adding olive oil to coffee - great idea! Thanks! And thank you so very much for sharing your experiences and diet - much appreciate hearing what works for you.
I had MRI done this past June that indicates Diverticulitis. I've been having flare ups lately and liquid diet seems to quell the flares, but I have to admit that it is scary to me since I've not experienced this before but I am getting older and sometimes these are things that hit you that you've not experienced before. I know my God has not given me a spirit of fear so while attempting to do the right things naturally to help me with these flare ups, I continue to pray and ask for healing, health, and guidance in this journey. Thanks for listening!
Hello @trured and welcome to Mayo Connect. I do understand what you mean about getting older. Aging does bring about more aches, pains, and digestive tract problems. I see that a liquid diet helps to quell the flare-ups. What type of eating plan do you follow on a regular basis? Do you drink water and have some exercise plan in place?
@hopeful33250
Drink water daily and during flare ups, drink liquids including grape juice, apple juice, clear broth, lemon popsicle bars, coffee with honey- no creamer. Also use heating pad and Tylenol to control the discomfort. Regular eating plan consists of chicken, some fish and meat, cooked vegetables and sometimes a salad but not on a consistent basis. Again, drink water daily and take one 8oz glass of Metamucil once only on Mondays Wednesdays and Fridays. I walk daily and lift weights 3× a week.
@trured
You have a good eating/exercise plan in place!

Thanks!
One thing I forgot to mention was that I will likely have to lay off the potato chips as that seems to bother my gut; one to three chips are fine, but any more than that I'm asking for trouble, so it is best to leave them alone so it's goodbye Lays (as a tear falls from my eye...lol!)
@trured
I luv Lay's chips too. After my surgery I started eating again. But, like you said a handful is ok. Just do not make a meal out of them!
@trured When I used to have flare ups, I would drink Chamomile and peppermint tea. It was my go too to ease the pain. I did try the diverticulitis tea too. Which was good.
@linda82
Wow! Never heard of diverticulitis tea! Where can I find that?
