12 years cancer free now suddenly stage 4 pleural effusion
Dr took me off letrozole last year after 11 years. This year blood work showed elevated cancer markers. Just had pet scan that showed no cancer, just small pleural effusion which tested positive for breast cancer cells. Dr says no cure

1 ReactionI received my first heceptin treatment this past week. Just herceptin. Still trying to wrap my head around everything, but I have a really good DR, and the staff is really friendly and helpful. Makes it a little easier.

4 ReactionsVicsmit, you have been through so much this year, yet you still sound positive, very inspiring! My MBC hasn't shown up anywhere but the pleural cavity yet. Hopefully the herceptin keeps it in check. I pray for you and for all of us facing this challenge.

Breast cancer metastasis to pleural fluid of lung.

I am 71 and on my 3rd event with left side breast cancer. The first time was in 1999, then again in 2009, and now in 2023. The first time I had a simple mastectomy, no lymph nodes removed and no other conventional treatment. The second time the cancer spread to the skin of the chest and axilla and 2 out of 8 lymph nodes. I had surgery, Arimidex, and radiation to the left side chest, axilla, and supraclavicular lymph nodes. No chemotherapy. I stopped the Arimidex after 8 months. Now, 14 years later, the breast cancer is in the pleural fluid of the right lung. I recently had an in-dwelling pleural catheter put in to be able to drain the fluid at home. Very unpleasant. I would like to connect with others who have this type of catheter due to breast cancer metastasis. I hope there are others on this website with a similar experience.

Sorry to hear the catheter is unpleasant. I hope others have tips to share. Did you ask the symptom management nurse about any tips to make things more comfortable?

1 Reaction@sistersupport , it looks like @relapse has not been active for a little while. I do hope others will chime in if she does not. Please see the post right above this for a few other pages that might have relevant discussions too.
