@tj1967 after my initial purchase of doses, a doctor from MenMD called me to ask how the injections were going. My answer was similar to yours. He said to make sure that, if I was in the correct "clock" position, then to make sure I pushed the needle in far enough to make a dimple in my skin before injecting the medicine. I haven't had a bad injection since.

@tomf For what it's worth, I found the following very small insulin syringe works best for me:
1/3rd mL syringe
29 gauge needle
1/2 inch needle length

I don't guess on the distance to insert the needle and simply insert the entire length. I've found it to be the perfect distance (not too deep, not too shallow) to be effective.

Walgreens carry these syringes. I live in Illinois so I do not need a prescription for insulin-sized needles.
