My recent CT showed growth of the 8mm nodule of 1mm- now it’s 9mm. (It was stable 3 months ago)
I’m at Mayo and they are recommending surgery or radiation. This is aggressive approach but like this plan very much. I’ve chosen surgery to get definitive diagnosis and genetic information. My pulmonary function is excellent thus making me a good surgical candidate. Even if this nodule is benign it’s ok with me. I’m 75 and very fit. Weights 3x week and vigorous Pelaton 3x week- for years.
I meet with cardio thoracic surgeon on Monday and have several questions. Do we start with Robotic or VATS wedge and proceed to segmentectomy if indicated (frozen section during procedure)? Or possibly to lobectomy? I assume lymph nodes are sampled and/or totally removed? If it’s stage 0 or 1 is it curative? I’m ready to have the surgery and start recovery. I would appreciate anyone with a similar case to comment or give their experience. Thanks.

I had similar experience four years ago (and I was 80!). I had CT scan and PET scan indicating potential cancer. I went to Mayo, and they suggested VAT wedge resection and potential removal of the nodule all in one sitting. They sampled lymph nodes. I agreed and in fact it was cancer. I was driving my car a week later. Surgery is the gold standard and provides information. I also have multifocal lung cancer - multiple primary cancers in the lung...so I did a second VAT on other lung 2 years later. Radiation may be less invasive, but it also has risks.

@wtr, I can't provide any specific insight, but I certainly wish you well on your path and hope the surgery provides the answers that you need. Hugs.
