Increase in BP while using Evenity

Posted by dgc @dgc, Feb 2, 2025

Has anyone experienced a rise in their blood pressure while receiving Evenity injections? My BP has gone into stage 2 hypertension after 3 months, the only change in my "lifestyle" has been the injections. I get 8000-11000 steps per day, spend 20 minutes 4 days a week strength training and eat a clean homemade diet, GF, alcohol and smoke free. My MD says high BP is not a known side effect of taking the injections. My response was then why the FDA box warning regarding cardio issues.

How did you resolve it? I have no cardio issues, but take BP meds and am concerned to hear the report on Connect about the rise. My Dr wants me to take Evenity.
Does it go back to normal if you stop taking Evenity?

Years ago, back in the 1990s, I took fosamax. (prescribed by the endocrinologist I saw for thyroid issues) At my annual gyn. visit I was surprised when the medical assistant called out my blood pressure as 150 over something. I asked the gynecologist to retake it when she came in as I had always had low blood pressure. I mentioned this to the osteopath I saw for my back issues, and for two months I saw him every other week and he monitored and charted my blood pressure readings. After 2 months of data I went off of it and at my next 2 week visit my b/p had dropped back to 118/60. At my next visit with the endocrinologist who had prescribed the fosamax, I relayed this information and he told me high blood pressure was not a known side effect. Well, it was for me. We all have different metabolisms, chemical make up, immune system responses. I will also add I found, after much research, a Canadian study whereby increase in blood pressure was the #2 side effect after esophageal irritation.

Could you please provide a link to the Canadian study you referenced?

It is so F#$&#^ ed the system approves these drugs and thinks they've "solved" our problem. I hate them.

I just had my 4th Evenity injections. I have had a significant increase in my bp over this last month and attributed it to an increase in my Lyrica medication. However, after seeing all of these comments, I’m not sure what to think. I am decreasing my Lyrica dosage. If that doesn’t lower my bp, I think I have to explore the Evenity a bit further. All of the above comments have been very helpful. Thank you!

All I can say is that I wish I had seen these posts last spring. I started Evenity in April 2025; my 10th dose is scheduled for two weeks from now. I had read all the literature about Evenity and thought it would accomplish my goal of safely building bone mass. In September, when I went for my 6th dose, the nurse checked my blood pressure before administering. It was higher than I’ve ever had in my life. Since then, I’ve been monitoring and have had 3 additional doses. So, my conversation with my doctor tomorrow will be whether it makes sense to have the last 3 doses, hoping that my BP goes back to normal. Or do we pull the plug now and consider a different treatment for osteoporosis. Thanks to all for sharing your experiences.

UPDATE: My doctor found some information that Evenity can elevate BP for women over 60. I’m 70. Because I have only 3 doses left, she suggested a low dose of omesartan to get my BP back down to normal to get me through the 3 doses. She also recommended a 2-year hiatus from osteoporosis meds so we can determine whether my BP gets back to normal. I appreciate her conservative approach.

Interesting. My 84 year-old husband has always had normal to low BP. Now low BP after 10 months on Evenity.

Before Evenity I always had very low blood pressure. Looking back I see that it started to go up when I started it. I saw my PCP and then a cardiologist. The cardio had never heard of Evenity, he did a quick look online, but didn't think the cardio events were that common. His suggestion was to finish the course of Evenity (I am on dose 10), but I am worried about doing that. He felt that I could go on for another 2 months w/o blood pressure meds unless it gets very high. It is now about 140/82 most days.

Have to decide in 10 days. My endo says if you don't start another med (Reclast or Prolia) within a month of stopping, you lose most of your gains, quickly. This decision-making is a lot of pressure.
