Has anyone gone off hormone therapy (ADT) after radiation?

Posted by gkgdawg @gkgdawg, Sep 2 11:42am

My husband has completed 5 weeks of radiation and 4 months of hormone therapy, 3.5 months ADT. His PSA is less than .2 The doctor seems pleased with the PSA and is hoping that it will soon be undetectable. If he gets to that point, can he take a break from hormone therapy and ADT. He gets his next hormone shot in October. I am hoping he will get Orgovyx , instead of the Elegard. I hate that the hormone therapy has impacted his muscle and bone density. He looks smaller to me. He is trying to do weights and he is signed up for a weight room next month, when we return home from our summer holiday. I would appreciate any input

I watch videos by PCRI (Prostate Cancer Research Institute) in California. They have one or two videos addressing intermittent ADT, as well as so many other videos. They specialize in Prostate Cancer. They just had a convention on the September long weekend for experts discussing new information and also for prostate patients. I didn't attend but am going to look on You Tube to see if they have produced any videos from the convention.

I’m an avid viewer of their videos and have been since i was diagnosed. I even called and spoke to one of their people over several issues totally agree with you. I was disappointed by their September conference. Not enough on PC. Thanks for reading them to all our attention!

Oh, so PCRI has already put videos of the September conference on You Tube? Oh, shoot, I was really hoping that there would be new information to see and learn. I spoke with a gentleman from their support team, as well. He was so kind and informative.

I’ve been looking and can’t find anything related to the September 5 conference. Apparently, it’s not been posted yet. There’s some updates dated August 30 but they’re just a snippet of a previous Conference.

Has anybody actually seen the September 5 conference on YouTube

I got radiation therapy of 48 sections one year ago and get rid of ADT completely at the same time due to its big suppressions to my immune system. My PSA were: 0.02, 0.06, 0.17 and 0.14.

So you received radiation, while taking hormone shots and ADT, as soon as they tested your PSA, you stopped your ADT?

Yes.
My ADT lasted only 3 months and was completely stopped just before the end of 28 sections IMRT.
I believe using ADT is necessary for better IMRT results.
My androgens was back to 450 now from tens and everything now is normal.

Wow, that sounds promising. It would be wonderful if my husband could get off the hormone and ADT treatments. Obviously, I don't want to jeopardize his health or risk the advance of the cancer but, perhaps, by watching carefully, that can be a possibility.

That decision has to be based on a lot of information. If someone has a very high Gleason score Stopping ADT too soon can lead to reoccurrences too soon. If someone is able to go for nine months to a year undetectable, it could be worth stopping ADT to see what happens. I would definitely want to have a doctor to discuss that option with the person asking to stop.

I’ve been on ADT for nine years because my cancer keeps coming back without it. I also need a second drug which is now Darolutamide. When I was on Zytiga I tried dropping from four pills to three pills To see if it would help with brain fog. In 18 days, my PSA went from .2 to 1. Definitely went right back on four pills.

That’s the type of thing one has to worry about. Prostate cancer can rapidly increase, Will it do that to you? No way of knowing.

Thank you for the caution, Jeff. Absolutely, any changes would have to be done with caution and medical advice
