Anyone here dealing with peripheral neuropathy?

I have been dealing with Diabetes for a number of years but am able to keep my A1C Levels good (6 or below). In the last month I started having burning in my feet (compared to Athlete's feed that I had years ago). Went to my pc when otc treatment didn't help and he is suspecting diabetic peripheral neuropathy. I have an EMG pending and have started Gabapentin 2x daily. This has helped but not removed the symptoms. I've read a bunch of the comments in here, but don't have time to read them all. Does anyone have any advice? Anything that I can do to help stem the worsening?

Welcome @type2neuropathyhope, It can be overwhelming not knowing what to do following a suspected cause of the neuropathy. Probably the best thing you can do is learn as much as you can about your condition and what treatments are available that may offer some relief. I'm guessing that's what you have started doing now. I don't have pain with my neuropathy just the numbness and some tingling but I've often thought that it could be related to diabetic neuropathy even though I have not been diagnosed with diabetes. I have been labelled as pre-diabetic for most of my adult life and it's only been since being diagnosed in 2016 with idiopathic small fiber PN that I started making lifestyle changes to get me out of the pre-diabetic category. It's not a cure but it has helped with my overall health. I just wished I would have made the changes before being in my 70s.

The Foundation for Peripheral Neuropathy is a good place to start for learning to live better with neuropathy - https://www.foundationforpn.org/living-well/. They also have a comprehensive list of the different treatments and therapies that may help - https://www.foundationforpn.org/therapies/.

I know you mentioned you don't have time to read all of the comments but you may find it helpful to scan through the discussions and comments on Connect for "burning feet what helps" - https://connect.mayoclinic.org/search/discussions/.

How soon is your EMG?

I just ordered these from Walmart. I have neuropathy in my feet from chemo so I figure I'd get the blood pumping down there and see if it helps. I ordered 2 of them. Not bad for portable ones. It was like $42 after shipping. I'm looking forward to using them.

I was recently diagnosed with bilateral peripheral neuropathy. Dr just sent in a script for B12, without explanation or follow up. I've finished the script & seen zero difference. I have constant tingling & pain in my lower legs & feet & they itch like crazy. I'm also told I have gluteal tendonopathy so the pain starts in my trochanter on both sides (left is worse), and the pain from that is almost debilitating sometimes. I've also have chronic plantar fasciitis,, had numerous injections in my feet but it only works temporarily. Love to hike & walk & its really painful now & takes days to recover. I've been doing yoga for years but can no longer do most poses. Terrible leg cramps at night & a lot of mornings I just cry. I don't see my dr until Jan. I'm very frustrated

Welcome @meabell58, Sometimes vitamin supplements can take some time to help. I'm guessing that your doctor ran some blood tests and may have found your B12 level low. It might be worth calling your doctor or sending a message a message on your patient portal if you have one. You might find it helpful to read what others have shared in the following discussion.

Are you able to call your doctor to ask about your B12 script and not seeing any difference?

Try to find another doctor, preferably one who has the same disease.

It is frustrating when you can't do a lot for yourself and I'm not dealing with a neuropathy anymore but I have really really bad arthritis in both my wrists and in my knees and I'm on letrozole for the breast cancer issue I have. The letrozole causes the pain in my legs and muscles. I'm on the Gabapentin to help the hot flashes but I started taking 800 milligrams of magnesium and I think that's helping more than the Gabapentin I've noticed how busy I've been but I've also had vertigo in the past and thought maybe that was part of that I am calling my doctor Monday to see if I can go off the gabapentin and see what happens.I have also started using some essential oils that a friend of mine gave me her sister-in-law has pain due to breast cancer and other forms of cancer and she's been using this mixture of essential oils with coconut oil and her pain has subsided dramatically so I have started doing that also.I hope at some point everything lights up because I just am not the person I was before I dread going to bed I tried getting out of bed if I sit down it takes me forever to get up because of the pain it's ridiculous you would think that they would come up with something else to help without all these bad side effects yes I'm glad to be alive<br />

@grandma41
I'd like to know what essential oils you used.
