Small Intestine Bacteria Overgrowth (SIBO)

Posted by jacque6977 @jacque6977, Feb 22, 2017

My wife, after years of suffering from debilitating nausea and fatigue, has finally been diagnosed with SIBO as confirmed by a hydrogen breath test. It is estimated the bacteria has had at least two years to grow and may be well established. She has started on Xifaxan, at $35 per pill, but it is estimated that elimination of the SIBO may take up to six months. Her day now starts with her waking up with nausea and when she has a cup of tea and toast in the morning she gets sick within fifteen minutes thereafter. Her sickness is accompanied by violent belching, and at times she regurgitates liquid vile. The only drug she has for nausea is Zofran which does nothing for her. Are there any other SIBO sufferers that are experiencing the same symptoms, and what are you taking to reduce the nausea?

All tests for Celiac disease, H Pylori, Endoscopy exams, tyroid studies and even the removal of her gall bladder have all been negative. As for grain, she has been too sick to eat anything beyond a piece of toast. My theory is that the bacteria has had over two years to grow and has probably migrated into the walls of her small intestine. This could be a six month regiment of drugs and probiotics, but my question is how to stem the chronic nausea during that six month period. A doctors appointment next Tuesday will see if he agrees with me and comes up with a cure for the nausea.

Although diagnosed with different conditions, @ptfitzy, @michellecrcrn, @tessie, @decosmo, @windwalker, @jillnc, @irene5, @mcpucho, @doron, have all discussed the many benefits of probiotics as well.

@lizbee78, did you have any questions about EPI?

Sounds awful, I am glad they have found the source of your problems now though. So how are they treating your SIBO?

After leaving the Mayo in November, I went through a round of Diflucan, Flagyl, and Cipro. That's it! The GI doctor at the Mayo said that was all I needed to do, and then take a daily probiotic. He strongly recommended Align, so that's what I take. I guess the bacteria is gone? I sure feel like it is, at least for now. I no longer have excessive gas, bloating, stomach pain, indigestion, diarrhea, vomiting, etc. Of course, SIBO wasn't my sole diagnosis, so some of my symptoms could've been related to other issues. Anyway for now I feel great. If at any point I have recurring symptoms, I was told to contact my Mayo GI doctor, and he'd reassess my situation.

Hello @vwerner,

If you would like to make an appointment at Mayo Clinic, the contact information for Minnesota, Arizona and Florida can be found here http://mayocl.in/1mtmR63.
Here's a link to Mayo Clinic's Gastroenterology department as well: http://mayocl.in/2mZtoGR. When you call any of the three locations, they will ask questions to help direct you to the best specialist.

@vwerner, I see that you posted about SIBO a while ago, and although it seems you've not found much relief, do you have any suggestions or tips for other members in this discussion?

Welcome back @melaniewa! A sincere thank you for all the support, information, and insight that you and @lizbee78 are offering.
It's obviously stressful, worrisome to have all these symptoms, but it seems to be a relief to at least get a firm diagnosis, so that you can get on the right treatment path.

@jacque6977, I can see that you are doing everything to help your wife, and I would really encourage you to view these discussions about chronic nausea; some of these are older conversations, but feel free to go through them, tag members, and join in.

@jacque6977, i hope your wife continues to heal. My daughter had severe nausea for 5 months, with vomitimg and then diarrhea. Turned out to be severe case of Clostridium difficile, a nasty bacteria in the colon. Rifaxamin finally killed it and WITHOUT side effects. It was an off-label use but it was a miracle. I know a lot about probiotics from this and working for a yogurt company. VSL#3 is good, a blend of 10 strains and refrigerated, which means viable. Kombucha, yogurt, kefir all good but also test for fructose intolerance, which can cause nausea, bloating, misery. Get to Mayo if you can, they work miracles...very thorough! Good luck and never give up! You are a great advocate for her.

It's the toast!!! She could have Celaic but with all the tests that is probably the first thing they tested for but she could have carbohydrate interlorance. Have her cut out all grain products and after a week see if she feels better. Experiment cutting out food groups, diary, fruit, wheat, one week at a time. It took me years of meds and surgery until I figured out I couldn't eat fruit!
