Has anybody heard of Mayo’s program on chronic pain and the brain?

I have heard that Mayo Clinic has a two or three week program that helps people with chronic pain by redirecting their brain. Has anybody heard of this and, if so, do you know who to reach to find out more about the program?

I went through the PRC program as well in Florida. It is a great program and I recommend it. It teaches you how to deal with the pain, it does not cure anything!
It’s a lifetime commitment to a change in your daily schedule!
I would say it changed me 50/50. My support system at home is a problem. It’s hard to incorporate new activities and mind set if you are not supported.
The program is great if have time to change and have a supportive family at home. It’s not cheap either- i had to buy some exercise equipment once i got home.

Thank you for your reply. I was wondering about the expertise part. My chronic pain is where I sit so I am hoping I can sit for the program or stand if need be.

I’m sure they don’t mind if you stand, but it’s all day long for three weeks Monday-Friday. I would ask them before you sign up.

Hi @maxieg, welcome to Connect. Congratulations on graduating the Pain Rehabilitation Program!! What an accomplishment! I'm a FL grad as well and equally think Dr. Sletten and team were absolutely incredible. A life-changing experience for me.

Thanks for mentioning the after care program and how it's been helpful to you. I find their private Facebook group for graduates very supportive, resourceful and inspirational. Are you a part of the fb group?

I think one of the best parts is just knowing that you are amongst peers and can support each other utilizing the PRC principles, get help with questions or set backs, and access resources. No one gets it quite like those who have been through the 3 weeks.

Dr. Sletten and staff also have a Blog here on Connect about the Pain Rehab Center and provide useful information about how chronic pain comes to be, tips and tricks on managing it, etc....

Check it out here:

If you're comfortable sharing - what have been your top areas of change and improvement over the 9 months since graduating?

Thank you @rwinney for your reply. Sorry that it had taken me a few days to get back to you. I would like to respond to your questions. I have not joined the Facebook group with graduates as I do not participate in Facebook but I may consider it. You have asked about my top areas of change and improvement. I would like to share a few.
I have to say that high on the list has been conquering imsomnia without medication. I have followed every step of the cognitive behavioral approach I was taught during the PRC program. Very successful and helpful in using all of the other tools for pain management very much needed to deal with difficult days.
Other significant areas and helpful PRCisms I learned:
— biofeedback, breathing and learning to relax.
—pull in the view finder
—don’t catastrophize
—hurt does not equal harm
—moderate—I am constantly
learning how to handle and accept my limitations by using the tools I was given in the PRC program. Without this program I would never have learned that I am able and capable of pushing through the most difficult days.
Forever grateful to Dr Sletten and his caring professional team.

No worries about the response time . You've got bigger fish to fry!

I was also not on Facebook, but 6 months after graduating, I finally decided to join only for the "Living the C" private support group. Let me know if you need any assistance should you decide to join.

Congratulations on conquering insomnia. That was at the top of my list, too. What a good feeling and huge accomplishment!

The PRC/Sletten'isms have stuck in my brain and I literally live a lifestyle built around them - complete with Post-it notes as reminders in my daily planner. Cognitive behavioral therapy can really be such a game changer if you allow it.

I'm super happy to hear you're working the program and reaping benefits alreafy. I fully understand how difficult the difficult days can be and how the PRC lifestyle is by no means an easy task, so keep up the good work! I'm here if you need anything.
