Risks of Hip Surgery with Osteoporosis
I have osteoporosis in my left hip (neck region) with a T score of -2.7. I know that I'm looking at a hip replacement at some point & wondered if anyone has had a hip replacement with osteoporosis. I'm beginning the process of checking out orthopedic surgeons for a consultation. I need to understand the risks involved. I'm 68 & exercise regularly. I'm noticing my hip is not as nimble as it used to be & in recent months is painful after sitting for any length of time (such as watching TV in the evening). It feels great standing & when I'm moving. Has anyone had hip replacement surgery with osteoporosis? What can you share about your experience?

Sugar monkeys - I had a replacement at age 75. With -2.1 hip score. No cement, all went well and I am walking without pain. Younger friends healed in 6-8 weeks, but it took me a little longer. I was getting around well in 6-8 weeks, but not completely healed for about 3 months.
There are other hip issues that can cause those symptoms and you may find you don’t need a replacement.🤞🤞

1 ReactionI had a hip replacement a year and a half ago, after fighting the idea for 6 years. It went very well. I have had osteoporosis for 18 years and finally started a drug (Tymlos) this year. I am glad for both. Surgery went great. No side effects from the Tymlos.

4 ReactionsI learned I had osteoporosis AFTER having emergency hip surgery about 18 months ago at 61. I had fallen on to ice from a step and went straight from ER into surgery. I guess because my fall wasn't charted as a fragility fracture (low trauma fracture) no one diagnosed me at that time. The surgery and recovery were very smooth and quick. About 4 months later I got a DEXA that showed -2.6 in my remaining total hip (about -2.3 in femoral neck and -1.8 spine). I was dx'd and started treatment.
They tried to start me on fosamax, but I researched and advocated to get on a bone builder called Tymlos. I've increased my bone density by about 15% after 9 months on Tymlos and I have about a year left. I am getting dental work done while on Tymlos and then will have a couple of reclast infusions after Tymlos is complete to "lock in" the Tymlos gains.
Long story short, with a T-Score of approximately -2.6 in my total hip (and -2.1 in my femoral neck), my anterior Total (left) Hip Replacement went great. I am active and forget I have it most of the time :-).

4 ReactionsCongratulations! Good news that you are better. I'm curious as to what type dental work ? I've Put off starting Evenity due to having root canal that now needs to be extracted. I'm desperate to start as I need hip and spine surgery but neurosurgeon wants spine stronger to hold screws. I think I have to wait a few months before starting Evenity due to risk of necrosis??? Can't see Rheumatologist until end of September to find out when I can start Evenity.
