So I’m 31 and I woke up one morning after starting in nursing school and my hands were swollen and painful by 3 days later they were so big I thought I would die from the pain they were even splitting open from the swelling. The pain at night especially did me in I couldn’t sleep for a solid week and became delirious. Then I was started on prednisone a mass dose for 1 month well first day some relief and by day 5 swelling started to go down and I slept 5 hrs but then it was time to go down to 1 less pill a day and by end of that day back to day 1 agony n swollen bad. Then day 4 of lower dose and I have numbness in face and chest I feel like I will die from pain or be paralyzed . Please has anyone had anything like this ?

Hello,
I’m really sorry about all you’re experiencing.
What has your doctor told about your condition? Any name? Have you been diagnosed with peripheral neuropathy? I guess I am failing to understand exactly what you may have or why.
I feel you really should go back to your doctor and if you’re not satisfied, then you really should look for another doctor until you can figure out close to exactly what you’re experiencing means medically.
I wish you the best.
Take care and have a serene weekend,
gus

Hello @kristen9999, I can't imagine how difficult it has been for you to have these painful symptoms appear all of a sudden one morning then to find some relief a week later. Then to have the pain and swelling in the hands and other symptoms come back as the prednisone dosage was reduced. @lel2022 mentioned having swelling in the hands and sometimes pain in another discussion (https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/anyone-experience-swollen-and-sometimes-painful-hands-with-mds/) and may have some thoughts. Has your doctor mentioned a possible diagnosis?

Sorry to hear of your suffering. Are you working with a neurologist and rheumatologist? Have you been diagnosed with anything?

I think the severe swelling has possibly damaged some small nerve fibers that may be contributing to your pain. Are you taking gabapentin or Lyrica?

You may also want to see an orthopedic spine specialist to see if you have any compression in your cervical spine that may be behind some of your symptoms.

I do not have an answer yet. I do have an appointment with a rheumatologist next month. My PCP ran blood tests for inflammation and rheumatoid arthritis which were slightly elevated.

Were you diagnosed with neuropathy? I have PN since 2018 and never had swollen hands and face.
I think you need more evaluation. That must be terribly uncomfortable.
