I’m about to have my gallbladder removed and am wondering whether I will be able to occasionally eat ice cream and other high fat foods afterward.

@katlp
I am supposed to have my gallbladder out due to biliary dyskinesia (low bile ejection function) but have delayed due to other surgery priorities plus I have heard many have problems after their gallbladder is removed.

Whether you have your gallbladder out or not, it would be beneficial to reduce unhealthy fats in diet and have more frequent, smaller meals/snacks.

I do not believe you can continue to have a fatty diet or large meals and not have symptoms after having your gallbladder out. Without your gallbladder to store extra bile to properly digest fatty meals, you may be in store for some discomfort post surgery.

dlydailyhope.. is right.

Thank you - good news!

So much to unpack with a loaded question regarding gallbladder removal.
Everyone is so different.
Had mine out two years ago and nothing but problems since.
Doctor diagnosed it as IBS with diarrhea.
We went thru lots of supplement protocols to repair a gut with dysbiosis.
Did lot of my own research and asked about BAM (bile acid malabsorption) and she sent me to the gastro doctor.
GAstro doctor asap claimed I had BAM and gave me a pill to "test" for 8 weeks to see if it helps. Barely asked me any questions just knew that's what hte problem is becuase i had diarrhea and a missing gallbladder. Inquired about two tests that could prove it but she said no they don't do those and said go to a functional medicine doctor if you want them done. I am not taking the drug as that bothers me to take a drug as a test with not proof of the disease. Especially when it's available. (not going back to that gastro doc again)
More research and am finding that there's a high potential for having ASID (Acquired Sucrase-Isomaltase Deficiency) so will be looking into that.
I have this last month reduced my fat intake to 50-75 grams and fiber increase to 20-30 grams and it did help reduce diarrehha to only 35% down from 50% per day. Then I had a big influx of sugar and lost all control. So now we move into testing for ASID.
STill working on the tests and where to get them for the BAM to be able to say yeah or neah.

So hard to say what will happen with anybody once gall bladder is removed. the lucky ones come out with no problems. Then there's ALL the rest of us who are suffering years later, trying to find answer and left to our own because the doctors who specialize in intestinal problems do do squat. And from this forum and others it's a common thing!

@catlpn I had my gall bladder removed in 2022, as well as losing part of my colon, during cytoreductive surgery. 2 reasons to modify my eating habits.

Everyone is different. My answer, for myself, is “yes” ♥️🙌 My gall bladder copes fine.

I love both ice cream and dark chocolate and I have some (not at the same time) occasionally as a treat while making sure to watch what else I’m eating on the same day to minimise things that overload my gall bladder and upset my digestive system.

It’s not an all out blow the guardrails!! I’m fine afterwards if I remember moderation and infrequent.

It’s trial and error working out what keeps your digestive system happy and life good!

Thanks for this -
