Does anyone have experience with a Reverse shoulder replacement?
I am scheduled for a reverse shoulder replacement in September because the rotator cuff repair (3.3 cm) did not work. The idea of reversing parts is a little unnerving.

While in theory, a regular TSR should allow a fuller range of movement due to the frontal rotator cuff muscles being retained, any time you have surgery, you run the risk of scar tissue or tendons not being able to return to an ideal state. Even with a regular TSR, there is no guarantee that you'll be able to have the same reach you once had. Most people have TSR's and reverses because of debilitating arthritic pain as well severely restricted reach to the front and up. I would not risk any surgery if my only problem was diminished backwards reach.
The reverse shoulder replacement is a miracle of medical engineering. Having said that. It means you have a long road of rehabilitation ahead of you. I am 77 years old and tripped up recently and managed to fracture the proximal end of my left humerus in several places.i was on holiday in France at the time.
I am now ten weeks post op. I think you will turn a small corner at six weeks when you will be able to manage without the sling Even so. It’s a long slow process and at times you will feel isolated. It’s good to share experiences with others.
I have now started abducting my arm to strengthen the Deltoid . Both by lying on my side and in standing. Also lifting my arm in front of me is improving but by no means fully functional. There is almost no external rotation yet. Without rotation other movements of the shoulder are difficult. Do not despair if things seem slow. I have a wonderful physio who reassures me that I will continue to improve for the next 6 months.
I have had a total reverse arthroscopy of my left shoulder, it was absolutely not a choice, I think that saying it is, is not truthful. It is a reverse because it can’t be done any other way due to loss of the joint.
I had a right RSR in Sept. 2023, and after all kinds of injections still have pain with movements and weakness. I cannot sleep on my stomach either. I am petite in stature which doesn’t help. I am still praying for healing!! Good luck to you!!🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Mine was June 25
Mine was done this way do to age
I can’t sleep on my stomach at all anymore
Same as you Petite
I wonder if it is a detriment
Maybe it is a choice for some people depending on their situation. No two cases are identical.
I was advised that I needed rsr, but refused and got pt and a second opinion. The pt was helpful, and I will be starting prp injections next month. I have improved strength and rom from the pt and continued efforts in the gym.
Sorry that you had no choice and wishes for a good recovery.
Exactly - each case is unique. In my case, I did have a choice because my surgeon said my rotator muscles were borderline - some fraying damage but still might be ok for a TSR. But since I didn't want to go through another surgery to put in a reverse later in case of failure, I opted for the rTSR. The shorter recovery time also was a bonus. I am very happy with my results.
Yes, everybody is different, but the reverse is usually done because of missing bone, we always have a choice, I just mean it’s the best option and sometimes the only option
Mine was May 19, and I wasn’t really given a choice since my rotator cuff was shot. My rehab has not been taxing at all. Exercises once a day at the beginning, now four times a week since I am strengthening the deltoid. I do have muscle pain after overdoing, but it doesn’t last more than a day. I am very pleased with the result.
