Increasing weakness in Legs

Posted by thurlibier @thurlibier, Aug 31, 2024

Four months ago I was able to walk without any problem even though I had neuropathy in my feet. I progressed to a cane and now I am only able to walk a very short distance with a walker, After a couple of hundred yards I cannot move my feet properly and my legs are weak and shaky. I spent a few days in Mayo where they did all kinds of tests including a MRI and were not able to come up with a reason. They discharged with the suggestion that I keep exercising. My muscles in my feet and legs are quite strong. I am very concerned that this weakness will lead to a complete lack of ability to walk in a very short time, Has anyone else experienced this or been able to stop the progression,

I am sorry but your husband sounds so selfish. How would he feel if the situation was the other way round and he needed YOUR support?
Probably won't help but you could try asking him that question.
But more practically, forget about him and concentrate on finding things that you can do that will make you happy. You deserve to be happy.
I can recommend taking some kind of classes - I am learning Spanish (don't ask why, I'm 74 so how much use will I get out of it?!?) The point is, I love the classes, the camaraderie, the friendship. And in between classes I have that interest (Duolingo, Youtube videos etc.) to keep me amused.
I find that, the older I get, it's friends rather than family that give the best support - and of course it is a two way thing. I am always there for them. To be needed is a lovely feeling.
After all, our family don't choose us but our friends DO, and we choose THEM, which is also a great feeling.
By the way I live on my own (since my selfish b***** husband decided he didn't need me anymore after 35 years of marriage), and I am less lonely now than I was in the marriage! And somehow I cope alone with all the infirmities that old age has thrown at me!
Wishing you lots of luck xx

Thank you so much for your kind words. It's my daughter who lives in
California - I am in Florida. I wish I knew what was happening but so far
the doctors don't seem to know either. Stay happy with your friends - I
wish you all the best

Yes. My situation is similar. Diabetic foot neuropathy, too a cane, now barely climb stairs and walk weakly occasional feeling legs give. Worry about mobility in future. PT helped balance, but not strength of legs. I ask is it a side effect of gabapentine I take? 3x300 mg/day? Going to PCP and neurologist now to see.

I recommend an exercise bike. That may give you the leg exercise without the weight. My best...

I have neuropathy in both feet. I detached part of my left hamstring while running. I joined a gym have been working
With all of the leg machines 3 days a week. My strength is coming back & balance is much better. Off days. I spend 45 min on my treadmill mill. I’ve seen much improvement in a a few months over a year.. I have very little foot pain with my neuropathy.

I switched over to elliptical. This gets my heart rate up into 140 & 150 plus a very good sweat. Pool of sweat on the floor.👍🥰🥇

Maybe swimming would be a better exercise for you. Falling down while working out in the pool doesn’t hurt at all. 🙏🏼🙏🏼

I was diagnosed with peripheral neuropathy 5 years ago. At the time it was only affecting my feet with tingling and slight lack of feeling in some spots in my feet. Beginning about 1 1/2 years ago I began losing muscle mass/strength first in my legs and then in my arms as well. For the past year it has become rapid. I went from using a cane for balance to using forearm crutches for balance and weight-sharing with my arms when I try to walk further than one average city block. I have undergone 2 EMG's in the past 4 months, but my neuron-muscular physician cannot find anything wrong other than the PN. I fear that the progression I'm experiencing will put me into a wheelchair soon. Can anyone give me some ideas for stalling or reversing my muscle deterioration?

Bill,
I have been noticing more leg weakness in the last couple of months in my legs, to the point where it actually hurts to walk. I also have to stop and rest my legs before walking any further. I did go to a pt a couple years ago who gave me lots of exercises to do daily to strengthen my legs. I got lax and stopped doing them. I am now back to my exercise regime and it is definitely helping to strengthen my legs. I started off slowly and each week I push a little further. I wish you all the best and hope you find something that will help you soon.

Thanks for your story. I am trying to do leg exercises regularly, right now just 1/2 squats. I'll begin trying walks next and hope the strength returns. Last Fall I was doing NewStep recumbent bike at the gym and swimming for about 2 months (45-minute sessions for each) but found that my muscles were just getting dramatically, measurably WEAKER, so I gave up on them. I'm hoping to resume, although I'm skeptical since nothing has changed with my neuropathy.
Fighting the good fight.
Bill
