I realize im late to the dance on this, but I discovered quite by accident something that while it doesn't cure GERD. it may help with the symptoms. I was reading one night, one of those screeds where the writer talks about how they did this and that...and then she discovered this amazing new cure. But the first sentence got my attention. She mentioned quite casually that her husband still took his nightly apple (sneer sneer) but the said this solution was much better (and much more expensive, for sure). I kept thinking about that apple. I'd been having more and more problems with reflux, and nothing really worked. Apples. Worth a try.
That night I ate half an apple. Went to sleep, woke up without a single problem. Did it again the next night, same thing. I haven't had a problem since, and it's been at least 15 years. It might be worth a try. And I eat what I want, no worries: squash, pizza, spaghetti, oranges...and a half apple before bed.

addendum: when it doubt, check with Google. They have no bias on this stuff, and they agree that over the counter meds are not only expensive, they don't work well, and can behave like a suicide squad toward all your other meds and vitamins. Im 80 now, and I've also learned to avoid chocolate and coffee late in the day. And the Reflux doesn't come back.
