Hesitant to begin drug treatment for my osteoporosis
Hello! My first post here as a new member. I am an active 69 year old female who was diagnosed many years ago with osteopenia but now have osteoporosis. When diagnosed with osteopenia I gave several drugs a try. I had side effects from all the oral choices I took, and when giving myself Forteo shots, broke out in hives all over my body. After that, I decided I would take my chances and go the natural route to keep my bones healthy with diet, consistent exercise and Calcium/Vitamin supplements. Fast forward to present time my last bone density scan was worrisome, (a -4,4 T score in my spine). An endocrinologist strongly suggested treatment, (shots or infusions), but I still fear side effects. I am currently trying to educate and empower myself by researching all options. I am already a bit overwhelmed with so many differing opinions. Drugs or no drugs?! The possible serious side effects of drug treatment still frighten me. Has anyone here diagnosed with more advanced osteoporosis, remained fracture free? Am I at such a high risk that I’m doomed without drug treatment? Thank you in advance for any advice, experiences, etc.

You betcha!
@jessicamc: hi! I am on Evenity and thought perhaps you might be able to give the injections to yourself. I don’t know about your availability for drug supplies, but I have mine shipped to doc office and I pick them up when call of arrival. I have injected into my stomach (sub-cutaneous fat) with no problems.
I like the procedure of weening off Osteo drugs! Let me know how it works for you! I am on month 3 Evenity 210mg (2 syringes) for osteoporosis, so it would be possible for me to decide how much to inject once per month towards the last few months of treatment. Let me know if you get responses from peers who have tapered off osteoporosis drugs!
Does this help with your decision?
PS: I haven’t had any side effects. My injection sites are a little sore for about a week, no other effects.

1 ReactionThank you for sharing your experience with Evenity. I’m open to all ideas. I have Afib and there may be some contraindications for me to try Evenity. What a difficult journey osteoporosis treatments have become!

3 ReactionsWhat is your doctor's drug sequencing plan and what is the rational for that plan? If and when will he/she be introducing a bone builder....tymlos, forteo or evenity?

1 ReactionI have been on Prolia for 15 years and had to STOP-NECROSIS OF THE JAW! Be careful..having your jaw chesiled out from dead bone protruding from your gums is awful.

3 ReactionsSince I have been on Prolia for 15 years, I would suggest starting with a
drug like Evenity that is less caustic... once you stop you either go on a drug like Forteo ($5000 a month)-injected each day) or you are SOL. Getting your jaw chiseled away - because of the jaw necrosis from Prolia, is not fun.

4 ReactionsThis journey with osteoperosis has been one where it depends on which endocrinologist you see. I am i my late 70's and was put on Prolia after Fozamax did not show improvement. 15 years later I have necrosis of the jaw and have had to have dead bone chiseled out of my jaw. In addition, my mouth looks like a cavern with torei protruding from all sides ( started after taking Prolia)
I have been told that I was started on Prolia way too soon, that no one should be on it for 15 years, that I would have to be on it forever, that- in the first year after stopping,-I would regress in bone loss, that there was NOTHING I could do but take Forteo at $5000 a month ( like I could afford that), and my only option was to try supplements myself! I even reached out to Amgen and the FDA and they basically, " So?" No one even wanted to include my necrosis in a report to track side effects!
Good luck. I have found a study at IU ( Indiana) that will track my bone density with free tests and dexascans each year.....I hope that my condition, if studied, will help someone else.

2 Reactionsdebbclay, will you be prescribed treatment during your study. Will they use bone markers during testing. Your warning is greatly appreciated. Obviously, we won't be sufficiently warned by the the FDA or Amgen, if they won't even include your experience in their records.
