Hesitant to begin drug treatment for my osteoporosis
Hello! My first post here as a new member. I am an active 69 year old female who was diagnosed many years ago with osteopenia but now have osteoporosis. When diagnosed with osteopenia I gave several drugs a try. I had side effects from all the oral choices I took, and when giving myself Forteo shots, broke out in hives all over my body. After that, I decided I would take my chances and go the natural route to keep my bones healthy with diet, consistent exercise and Calcium/Vitamin supplements. Fast forward to present time my last bone density scan was worrisome, (a -4,4 T score in my spine). An endocrinologist strongly suggested treatment, (shots or infusions), but I still fear side effects. I am currently trying to educate and empower myself by researching all options. I am already a bit overwhelmed with so many differing opinions. Drugs or no drugs?! The possible serious side effects of drug treatment still frighten me. Has anyone here diagnosed with more advanced osteoporosis, remained fracture free? Am I at such a high risk that I’m doomed without drug treatment? Thank you in advance for any advice, experiences, etc.

Please look up Dr Loren Fishman’s yoga program to reverse osteoporosis. There are many YouTube videos, I do the chair yoga one. A friend of mine who followed the program has reversed her bone loss. I have only been doing it 5 months so I haven’t had a bone scan but I have less pain. Paola
My endocrinologist pointed out that HRT is much more effective for helping spinal mineral density but not so much for the hip.
debbclay, thank you for warning us. Your experience has been genuinely terrible. You must have gone on Prolia very soon after it was prescribed. Studies on rebound fractures with Prolia were published by 2016. You were probably never warned. https://www.aboutlawsuits.com/prolia/
I am interest in people's experiences with any of the osteoporosis treatments. They all sound potentially bad and I don't know which way to go.
I am on Tymlos and have done well. Forteo is a similar drug. These are "anabolic" drugs. Research has shown that starting with an anabolic is most effective. Most people do well with them. Some have issues.
After two years on these bone-building drugs, you have to either take a biphosphonate to lock in the gains, or you need another bone-builder like Evenity or Prolia if you still need more bone density. This is where it gets tricky.
janiskir, Forteo is safe. Plus it build the best. most resilient, most integrated bone. It's often prescribed for osteonecrosis or atypical fractures caused by the other drugs. It is prescribed sometimes before dental work and before spinal surgeries because it integrates the hardware.
I've heard of only one person who had an allergic reaction.
My experience with two years of Forteo has been free of any negativity.

I haven't logged in for months but every time I do I see so many people who sound like me. ALso had breast cancer but so wanting to try bioidentical HRT because it sounds like you might get better, more genuine bone from that. ALso the side effects of all of them scare me, Evenity most of all with that black box warning (my doctor wanted to put me on that from day one, when my worst score was "only" a 2.5 - but in her defense, she knew I wanted to get back to skiing and other sports) I really don't know what to do.
that is exactly how I feel.
and when I said to my ex-sister in law, who does Reclast, that it doesn't sound as bad as Evenity which my doctor was pushing, she said "they all suck."
it really is inexcusable that medicine can't be more aggressive in finding some non-harmful drugs for this large contingent of women. It's like medicine and our doctors believe the problem is "solved." So our jaws will rot and our thighs spontaneously fracture, we have to accept that "all drugs have side effects."
It makes me mad.
sl303, check out Forteo. It's the safest and builds the best bone. More natural than bioidentical female hormone, Forteo is parathyroid hormone that will build more flexibly resistant to fracture, more integrated bone, faster.
@gently What do you plan on taking after Forteo?
