proximal hamstring avulsion Surgery

Posted by upgirl2013 @upgirl2013, Jul 14 5:29pm

Hi,
I fell on July 3 and tore my hamstrings off my sits bones.
Last Friday I had surgery to have three anchor screws to attached the hamstring to my butt.
My pain on day 3 is only at the incision site and not too bad.
I have found little information regarding personal recoveries.
I currently have knee brace set for 90degree with strict instructions to not put my foot down. I am using crutches as our house is too small for the turning radius of the scooter that I rented.
How do you maneuver stairs? It seems like I have to bend my leg past the brace allowance to go from our living room to our entry way.
I figured out how to take a shower by getting on the shower seat first, taking the brace off and drying diligently before putting brace back on while sitting on the shower chair. We use suctioned cup hand rails on our plastic shower stall.
Any tips, testimonials and questions are welcome.
Katy

I had a partial tear, debridement and repair. One anchor. I was not in a brace, could not use crutches and walker was rough. Was up and going in less than six weeks. Good wishes on a healthy recovery. Following instructions- no surgical complications will get you going faster. Keep doing what you need to!

no crutches or walker
the crutches seemed like death waiting to happen for me so I got a walker. after a week and half I realized there was caps for the non- wheel part. wow it glides so much easier over the floor. I was so surprised that they took the brace off but like you said you have to follow instructions to the tee. I had alot of nerve pain with the brace on but now that it is off I only have some now and then. the brace was way to tight and the pads on it were not set on correctly. which I adjusted and when laying just in bed we took the bottoms off to give less tension. I have to use the walker for stability for up to six weeks or until I can walk completely with no limp and no pain. the pain is have now is only from my knee being stiff but with the PT exercises it is already getting better where I can walk flat footed with the walker

LOL. So true.
You do have to do some advocacy as the providers don't know EVERYTHING. Don't be afraid to speak up.

That is fantastic news. I am glad to hear the nerve pain is gone. My brace was adjusted to 40 degrees on Monday. My kneecap does not like that angle. I am going to talk to the PT about it today.
I am getting used to the protection of the brace and am afraid that I am going to put too much pressure in my foot. Friday will be a month from the surgery and my scar area is still tender.
Getting in and out of the car is easy for me. It is good for me to go out every once in a while.
Keep up the great work with your recovery and therapy.

I wish you the best and continued recovery.i started just using my toes because I figured that was safe and not to much pressure. it felt weird at first but today i am walking flat footed. my is swelling a bit. maybe I have slow down but they said to walk. I do take breaks and put my leg up and at night after exercising my leg I put ice on it fir awhile. I hope that helps

I'm with you- mourning the loss of summer. I am a gardener and injured myself in the garden. Not being able to enjoy it is tough.
Sorry, but I also see humor in your post. My complaint is throwing chlorine in the pool every day that I can't use! I should be able to go in about the time we cover it for the winter.
You might have better luck finding a cleaner on Facebook- local community pages, ours has a babysitter page where there might be a student willing to clean- it never hurts to ask especially if you would pay more. I am on crutches with 20# weight limit on one side for 6 weeks.

Gardening, July 11, 2024...Was digging with a regular spade. Hit a rock- forcefully- and it fought back. It threw me to my left (have a hip replacement on that side only). On that side of me was a steel retaining wall and slate sidewalk. I envisioned my neck landing on the steel so I fought the fall with everything I had. I was airborne for wha tseemed like a long time- arms circling in the air like a clown, and finally was successful at NOT falling. However, immediately upon becoming upright, I felt like a board cracked me acrosss the backside.
That began more than a year of poor medical management of what was finally addressed surgically: full gluteus medius tear, with retraction, and fatty atrophy ( I call it the trifecta).
A well known OS along the way said "I'm 62 abd I'm sure I have partial tears, too". Although partial tears showed on the MRI, I knew it was more. We know our bodies but are often discounted, unfortunately.

It has been four weeks since my surgery. I still loathe the brace and crutches, but am doing better moving around the house and getting outside. I drove myself to PT this week. Grocery shopping would be impossible and I am counting on my husband to do it. Every time I suggest delivery or pick up, my husband gets upset, and says he would rather do it himself. My brace is set for 40 degrees now with toe touch. The first few days my knee cap hurt a lot and now it seems to have adapt to the new trajectory. Since the leg is straighter now, I cannot fit between the going outside chair and the wall. I am putting as little pressure on my injured leg and stepping up. Going down the one step easy for me and I do not have to toe touch. Yesterday, I walked(crutched) outside for 10 minutes. And I am hoping to do so again this afternoon. I made two meals using one crutch to get around our tiny kitchen. I needed help getting something out of the oven and carrying the plates to the table. I am counting down the days until my next appointment with the surgeon in two weeks. Fingers crossed the brace can stay off.
It feels good to feel a little more active.
It is definitely harder keeping the affected toe off the ground with the straighter leg. I am constantly reminding myself to pick it up and to be a stork.
I hope you all doing well and finding life a bit easier as you recover.

Went to PT today and my brace is now at 10 degrees. I can start walking, with crutches, at partial weight bearing. PT explained how to walk correctly and I have been watching videos this evening. PT reminded me not to hop or jump. I am still at the healing stage, which I have zero patience for. Total knee replacement recovery was a breeze compared to this.
I am not sure how I feel about my leg being so straight all the time. It always takes a day or two for me to get used to the trajectory of my leg after the brace is adjusted.
Doing simple tasks were easier with a slightly bent leg. My husband will have to assist me(again) taking the brace off and putting it back on to shower.
Since I do not have the clearance at my doorways to use the chair method, I will have to use the crutches to get in and out of the house. Another thing to practice tomorrow with the in home care aid.
Continue to take care of yourselves.

Today is week 8 since surgery. At six weeks my PT “opened the brace”. Which meant I was walking on both feet with crutches. We went camping and attended a music festival. Both were a little overwhelming. The in-home aide helped me prepare the food for camping. The post surgery fog finally went away. At seven weeks my PT added a bend to my open brace and I started walking without crutches. I also started sleeping without my brace. It took a few nights for me to trust that the scar tissue and anchors will support my leg if I moved it iwrong. I also went to the grocery store for the first time. What a nice feeling to have my hands free. I started going downstairs and am able to start the laundry process. The PT has me keeping my brace off at home, until my leg gets unsteady. Then I put it back on or keep it on after being out. I am hoping that next week will be last week with the brace.
At each PT visit, I get assigned a new exercise. It takes me about twenty minutes to go through the exercises. I am supposed to do them three times a day. I have yet to do them more than twice a day.
No floor work, swimming or practicing yoga.
I am back to cooking most meals and doing light housekeeping. I still tire very easily and miss having stamina to do multiple activities a day.
My husband was having a hard time with someone else working in the house, so I terminated the in-home services.
His dementia makes him a little paranoid regarding his personal belongings.
The dull ache in my glute is very tiresome. The surgeon said that the ache can last the entire 6 months of recovery.
Prior to going camping I inquired about having a load/carry limit and was told 10-15 pounds. I am going to stick with that until my 12 week check up with the PA.
I hope you all are on schedule with your recovery processes.

I did the same thing, tore my ham strings off my sit bone. I am 67 yr old woman. Happened Sept 7, 2days ago. I know I will have the surgery. but the local doctor has only done 6 surgeries. He wants to do the surgery in 2 more days! He seems very capable, but I am very scared with only preforming 6 surgeries.
He said it is a rather uncommon surgery, and wants me to make a decision quickly, before scar tissue builds. What time line did you follow to have your surgeries after your accident. I won't have time to get a second opinion, or do any research. I am new to the area, and do not have a network of support in the medical community.
What type of surgery did you have: open or endoscopic?
Any information about doctors experience and surgery timeline would be helpful.
Thanks,
TAB
