proximal hamstring avulsion Surgery

Posted by upgirl2013 @upgirl2013, Jul 14 5:29pm

Hi,
I fell on July 3 and tore my hamstrings off my sits bones.
Last Friday I had surgery to have three anchor screws to attached the hamstring to my butt.
My pain on day 3 is only at the incision site and not too bad.
I have found little information regarding personal recoveries.
I currently have knee brace set for 90degree with strict instructions to not put my foot down. I am using crutches as our house is too small for the turning radius of the scooter that I rented.
How do you maneuver stairs? It seems like I have to bend my leg past the brace allowance to go from our living room to our entry way.
I figured out how to take a shower by getting on the shower seat first, taking the brace off and drying diligently before putting brace back on while sitting on the shower chair. We use suctioned cup hand rails on our plastic shower stall.
Any tips, testimonials and questions are welcome.
Katy

Hi Katy, I did the exact same thing you did to my hamstring on June 16, I had surgery July 15.
I couldn't manage the crutches at home. So my insurance covered a walker alot more stable for me. I am not doing stairs as I already fell twice. ugh.
I also got a toilet seat riser for making going to the bathroom easier. I have been sponge bathing daily. my daughter washes my hair for me.
My brace is set at 90% they said but the paperwork said 75%.
we are not supposed to use our injured leg at all. I purchased chucks pads for my bed ( they help to slide to off bed easier)and I wear a moo- moo. I bought some cute ones off amazon. So much easier than clothes. I'm not sure how to upload pictures but I can next time if someone needs to see.
I was on oxycodone for pain but off that
I do have alot of nerve pain. does anyone else? I am taking lyrica and tylenol for that it seems to work.
open to any information on a timeline if healing process from anyone.
this is the worse injury ever. the pain when I first did it was as bad as labor to me. I am glad that pain is gone and now just dealing with healing pains.

I cannot imagine going a month with my hamstrings detached from my pelvis. Your sciatica nerve may have comprises during the month prior to surgery. I am wearing dresses and wide shorts. Can you take your brace off to shower? It is the only time I take it off.
Keep posting and telling your recovery stories.

hi upgirl
we are twins. my brace is the same. very heavy on my left leg. I use a walker in the house. my walker is awesome. so much more stable than the crutches. I have only gone out one time as I already fell so it is scary. I use a toilet riser seat. which is awesome. I have my 3 week appointment. did they tell you how long you would be in the brace?
take care.

I will be in a brace set at various degrees for at least 8 more weeks. It is very hard to sleep in it and put a soft blanket between my knees. I still sleep with my leg slightly elevated.
I am used the crutches but could see a benefit to a walker. The knee scooter is going back to the loan closet on Monday. The back of my brace hits the back of my leg.
This is a horrible injury and long recovery.
Stay safe and hopefully you will get out of the house soon.
Keep us posted aa how your pre op appointment went.

The bad part about this brace it is so heavy. know about sleeping and laying with the brace. When sleeping on my back prop it and then while propped up take the shin straps off for a bit. I also sleep with rolled up small blanket between my legs while laying on my side. I just try different positions to keep the nerve pain to a minimum. if you need the walker they have them at the mayo store. your insurance should cover it, if you have an order from your doctor I put a cotton sock piece underneath the back of my knee for that pain. it helps. This is the worse injury I have ever had too.
I wish you best. just know I am here to share our recoveries together. I hurt myself june16 and had surgery july15. so now my summer is over pretty much.

thank you. I dont take the brace off at all as I am afraid of reinjuring myself.
I know that my sciatica nerve was messed with surgery and possibly before but the pain is getting better every day.i hope it continued. the month before my surgery was horrible the pain was horrific. I actually walked straightened leg the whole time and even did stairs. I dont know how but I made it to surgery. It feels alittle weird now that that pain has subsided. This nerve pain is not half as bad as the before surgery pain.
please take care. I have my first post-op appt on Monday. ill let you know how it goes. 🫂 🤗

Do have to go back to work soon? I retired a year ago and am thinking that it would be nice have a job to do. I do not sit well.
We just have to figure out another way to enjoy the summer. I am feeling well enough at 3 week post op that I am missing being control of my daily activities.
I no longer tear up in the morning when I see the crutches at the end of my bed. I do sigh and hope I have the strength to hoist me around all day.
I am going to ask a friend with a pontoon boat for a ride. I should be able to crutch on the dock and into their boat. We have a fishing boat and I will not be in that until next Spring.
I do miss a cold summer beer and decided that I am going to have any alcohol until I can stand on two feet.
My husband is mourning the loss of his summer too. I keep telling him to ask a friend to do something. With his cognitive impairments he relies on me for his social interactions and I do not have the strength to do manage that now. He still golfs on Wednesday and I have been encouraging him to go more days.
It has been so dry here that the crutches work well on grass and I have been able to walk around to our back patio. The steps scare me and I try to avoid them at all costs. Reading on the patio and being outside was nice.
Since it is my left leg, getting in and out of the passenger seat is easy. I have never been one to go for a ride just to go for one, but this past week I have enjoyed just seeing something different than the inside of the house.
I have being doing a mental inventory of restaurants that do not have steps and have handicap accommodations. We finally have insta cart and door dash in our area, but I want to get out for a bit.
I have figured out how to make the bed by hopping around it. I only make it when I am too squirrelly to sit still.
For my mental health, I started cleaning the kitchen yesterday. I had my husband help with things I could not do. Which was hard because kitchen cleaning was always his chore. Last time our house was really cleaned was June 20th before our company came. We have yet to find a cleaning service and the in home care aides do the bare minimum. We live in an area where the cleaning services are independent woman who are aging out or are cleaning cottages and primary homes of their clients this time of year. Care.com had two persons and I did not want to give my credit card number without knowing if those persons would work out.
The in home care provider is coming for an extra hour on Wednesday and I am hoping she will finally swifter the floors.
Our laundry is in the basement and my husband is now responsible for all laundry. Yesterday, he could not remember how to change the cycles and start the washer. I had him take a picture of the dials and then I could show him. I am pretty sure he forgot the detergent. I have no idea what the laundry room or basement look like. I suggested that we go to the laundromat and you thought I had asked to go to the moon.
By my ramblings, you can tell the post op mental fog is gone and now the reality of my limitations has set in.
On a side note: I asked my PT why I have a metal taste in my mouth and she said it was because the trauma to my body set off my metal fillings and it is possible the mercury is leaching into my system. Who knew???
Hang in and remember this only temporary.

is that standard 8 more weeks?
I sleep with a pillow also between my knees and one to elevate my leg. r u having any nerve pain at all.
ill went out today for a bit. exiting and entering is so scary for me as the door stoop is wide. maybe you could get a walker but you sound like you are doing an excellent job with the crutches. where do you live? r u close to Rochester?

My PT said that my surgeon is being conservative and cautious with my recovery. Some surgeons recommend 6 weeks in the brace.
I am not having any nerve pain. There is a constant dull ache in my glute area, but not severe enough to take Tylenol. I had a total knee replacement in April of 2024 on the same leg and my knee cap is sore from inactivity.
Is your stoop wide enough for a armless chair? I am using an armless shower chair to slide off of and put my good leg down first. We have two steps to get into out house, one to the entryway and one to the house. I put the chair sideways on the threshold, sit on it, turn, put my good leg down and then using the crutches standup. I repeat that process at the next step. To get back in, I hoist myself with my arms on the side of the chair, until my tush is in the chair and reverse the process. The first few times it was hard, now it is second nature. We went out to dinner last night and I chose to sit in high booth and that was much easier than trying to get out of a low chair.
I live in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan by the Wisconsin border.

I'm with you- mourning the loss of summer. I am a gardener and injured myself in the garden. Not being able to enjoy it is tough.
Sorry, but I also see humor in your post. My complaint is throwing chlorine in the pool every day that I can't use! I should be able to go in about the time we cover it for the winter.
You might have better luck finding a cleaner on Facebook- local community pages, ours has a babysitter page where there might be a student willing to clean- it never hurts to ask especially if you would pay more. I am on crutches with 20# weight limit on one side for 6 weeks.

good morning
I live in Minnesota near Mayo in Rochester. I had my 3 week appt yesterday. guess what they took the brace off. what a relief. I asked about why now and how safe it is. My doctor said it is ok that as long as I follow his instructions everything will be fine. I guess I should trust him as he as the professional. im so happy. my leg was so weird and it felt like it was not there for awhile. by afternoon I was able to do small steps with my left leg. I am so excited and cannot wait for you to feel this joy.
I have to use my walker for up to 6 weeks until I can am able to walk completely normal with no limp and no pain. the sciatic nerve pain seems to have lessen since the brace is off. I have to call my insurance about a medi-cab as I can't drive and I have PT once a week for the next month for sure

I had a partial tear, debridement and repair. One anchor. I was not in a brace, could not use crutches and walker was rough. Was up and going in less than six weeks. Good wishes on a healthy recovery. Following instructions- no surgical complications will get you going faster. Keep doing what you need to!
