Reducing Forteo dose to every other day to reduce side effects?

Posted by mspatart @mspatart, Apr 6, 2023

Has anyone suffering from daily Forteo injection side effects modified the dose to every other day or to stopping for 3 days and then starting again for one to 2 weeks? I cannot tolerate the massive wave of side effects that hit me after just 2 weeks and can't find any information on how modifying the dose would 1. Reduce side effects, 2. Alter the effectiveness of the drug.

The only study I found was done on rats and the results seemed insignificant in terms of effectiveness.
Thanks to ANYONE OUT THERE!!

My doctor gave the okay for every other day Forteo.

She said it was as effective as every day.

I’ve had fatigue for the first five months. Now it only happens periodically. (Beginning the eight month now.)

My CTX shows I’m making progress.

When I started I had seven fractured vertebrae.

Now I can stretch in bed (hooray).

Hope this helps.

Hi Susadenn,

I am so glad to receive your questions. You’re the only one who responded to the “zapping” in my legs, including my doctors. …I stopped Forteo after the 28 days, and my doctors never commented. The “zapping” stopped when I stopped. I haven’t been taking anything else except Costco calcium with magnesium. I just had a scan. My numbers have worsened, and I have a lot of symptoms of osteoporosis, so I will contact my doctor again…but I am not hopeful that I will find a medicine I can tolerate. Did your doctors comment on your zapping? Are you continuing with Forteo? Please let me know what you end up doing! Thanks!

I also had this side effect on both Tymlos and Forteo. I attributed it to stimulation of bone growth from both meds. I am in Evenity now and have the same effect.

I had to stop the Forteo because of extreme constipation and bloating unrelieved by laxatives.

I tried two rounds of Forteo with breaks of 2 weeks in between but had the same issue each time.

I had a similar issue with Tymlos.

I have come to the conclusion that all these medications can result in side effects for some of us, Many people do not have any side effects.

I am continuing on the Evenity (9 months left) because I have weighed the pros and cons and feel that it’s worth it (for me) to continue in order to avoid another fracture. I recall what my dad’s last 15 years were like with severe osteoporosis and wish to avoid it.

I am just glad that there was another option for me (Evenity) that doesn’t cause the same side effect that caused me to stop the other two.

I had to find a good endocrinologist to help me sort through this.

Hi Susadenn,
My doctor recommended Fosamax for osteoporosis, but I couldn’t tolerate that years ago, so I think I’ll just follow a good diet. I read what Dr. Greger says about diet. You may be interested in his frequent videos. He is world renowned researcher and created Nutrition Facts……nutrition facts.org. I have felt really pretty healthy for many years…I’m 81.
I’m going to talk with Kaiser pharmacy on Monday and see if they’ll answer my question about the zapping feeling while taking Forteo. Just recently some said they thought is was causing the bones to become stronger……who knows. I couldn’t find any answers when I searched the web which makes me paranoid. Good luck to you and keep in touch! Kaia
