Osteoporosis and lower back pain

Posted by kdickerson @kdickerson, Dec 23, 2024

Hi everyone and thank you for taking time to read my post. I am 58 and healthy- retired teacher and now teach 3 days Reading Intervention. Here is my issue- I have severe osteoporosis and, to be honest, I’m scared. My hips are mild to moderate but my spine is in the range 3.2 to 3.4. I love my doctor and trust him completely. His plan is to start Evenity then Prolia. Can someone share experience with pain? My lower back hurts off and on all day but worse in the mornings. Thank you all so much.

Yes, I've tried the googling and have discovered there is quite a variety. I'll check out the Viscosoft, I believe I ran across it online. These toppers all seem to be vacuum packed. Did yours arrive that way and did you have any difficulty with it filling out properly?

Thanks again.

No problems. It looks a little squished and small when initially laid out, but it fills up and out to normal size in an afternoon or more. Also no odor that I found.

Hi,
I am 83 and have had osteoporosis for many years, I do not take any drugs…my choice. For me, exercise is the only way to prevent lower back pain. There are specific exercises that will help. Aside from daily walking, I have 3 active senior gym classes daily. We learned how to stretch and how to stretch our hamstrings. I stretch my hamstrings in the morning (using my kitchen table)..each leg a minimum of 40 seconds and also at night…sometimes during the day. We are all too sedentary and sit too much . I find myself doing short spurts of stretching and mini exercise routines throughout the day. If there are no senior gym classes available to you, try to find some online stretching routines and do them religiously. It will make a world of difference in how you feel.

Also, check your diet and try to eliminate any inflammatory foods you may be eating. Adopt this approach of exercise and diet and you will see your mental and physical self improve so much you won’t recognize yourself. Doctors seem to go straight to drugs as a solution. Obviously, in my case , I don’t agree.

Good luck

Hello FL Mary,
I just happened upon this site. I hope this finds you well.
I also do not want to take any drugs...my choice; even though the doctors say I need to now. My lumbar spine score just came back -3.4. I was very upset about this but really want to try to make this number better without meds. I started to go to a gym (just need to make sure they give me the correct exercises for my spine). I just realized what I have doing at home for Yeats was all wrong (touching toes, twisting etc). I wonder if that made my number worse??
Can you tell me what you do for supplements? I take a vitamin D3 (2000 units) daily. I am also on a statin and aspirin so need to make sure other supplements are okay to take with those. Any information you can give would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you!

I am on a statin. I also take D3 and K2. I also take meds.

-3.4 is not a good score, and vitamins/exercise will help but aren't going to fix it, unfortunately. I started out at -3.3 two years ago, and now I'm -2.0 or better - but that's after being on Tymlos.

Hi,

You need to take the d3 k2 combo of vitamins that I do daily.
I get mine from Pure Encapsulations online..I trust their source and wouldn’t order any vitamins from Amazon.
I have not changed my exercise regime and still walk daily and attend gym classes 3 times a week. I am doing more resistance and strength training at home. I do lift weights at home …use 8 lbs..and 7 lbs in the gym. And I love to stomp my feet….another bone strengthening move.
I am lucky not to have any thing organically wrong and do not take any medications. The other vitamins I take are tumeric cucurmim with black pepper which increases absorption and just started fish oil..these mainly are anti inflammatory….also an eye vitamin. I don’t know if any of these vitamins help but I don’t think they can hurt.

My diet is fish, chicken, vegetables as much as I can adhere to that. No processed foods other than cheese and minimal red meat. I don’t take calcium but do like yogurt so am getting my calcium through food as much as I can.I happen to like spinach and kale and vegetables in general and also a good pizza lol. I don’t deprive myself. I am about 5 ft 6.5 and weigh 110…and am thin boned so I am very aware of how fragile that can be. My weight never changes.

I do some floor exercises and touching of toes. I know what they say about the spine but this has been my lifestyle for so long that I don’t feel that I am injuring myself.

That’s all the vitamins I take..whether they are doing any good is unknown. I am 84 now and don’t intend to get another dexa scan. My big thing is not to fall so all these exercises are for maintaining balance which is what my gym instructor focuses on. I am just very careful how I walk and what kind of footwear I have on.

I don’t know if this is helpful but this is how I choose to live and you need to research and decide what’s best for you.
